Few events are more awkard than social gatherings hosted by Jewy organizations for New York City's young and old-but-think-they're-young Jews with money. Often at these gatherings people actually eat the buffet, the gentile count is zero to five, ticket and/or drink sales benefit something or other for Israel, and singles fiercely prowl for a Nice Jewish Girl/Boy. Popular conversation topics include "When I went to Israel…", "What are you doing for [insert next Jew holiday here]?", and "How was your [insert most recent Jew holiday here]."
The New York Observer's Transom covered one such awkward evening on Saturday: the Friends of the Israeli Defense Forces’ Young Leadership gala. One board member said money raised from the gala will go toward "[improving] the lives of Israeli soldiers." He continued:
"We ask the commanders what they want, they ask their soldiers, and we buy those things for them. We give mobile gyms, we give scholarships, we take care of their children and send them to summer camp, we build on-site synagogues, we provide rest-and-recreation weekends. Really things to better their lives. War is hard."
Attendee and Manhattanite Kyle Koppel, 22, recalled a "boot camp" she participated in with the Israeli army:
"It was unbelievable—it’s pretty much a college campus," she said. "But instead of learning about science and mathematics, they’re learning how to kill people."
“…Everyday I would talk to my dad and go, ‘Why don’t Jewish boys in New York look like this?’ He said it was the machismo factor.”
Good call, Dad. Men in New York are way too obsessed with things like highlights, clothes, manicures, etc. But could it also be that they're not in, like, the my where they're doing, like, physical activity, in, you know, the sun…?
