In episode 27.2, David is joined by Rabbi Leah Jordan to read the second third of Parshat “Yitro.” Sadly, not much happens this week plot-wise. God spends most of it repeating the same directions over and over, preparing the people to receive his all-important law. But that doesn’t mean David and Rabbi Jordan don’t have a lot of fun dissecting all the goofiness—and discussing Judaism, God, the Reform movement in the U.K. and the U.S., growing up in Kansas City, and much more. With that said, we might have to question the timing of their wit and a reference to a Gabriel García Márquez novel in their recent press release to talk about the Jewish denominations help in the fight against the cholera epidemic in Haiti.

The Union for Reform Judaism has raised more than $1.2 million for relief in Haiti, since the earthquake hit last January, and they name checked a novel by the Nobel Prize winning Colombian writer to let the world know they aren’t done.  The e-mail titled “Help In the Time of Cholera: THE REFORM JEWISH MOVEMENT CONTINUES TO REPOND TO CRISIS IN HAITI,” outlined the movements continued support of the country:

“Although the earthquake is no longer in the daily news, thousands of Haitians are still suffering,” said URJ’s Chief Program Officer Rabbi Elliott Kleinman. “I am proud that the Reform Movement will not let them be forgotten. “

That’s really noble, and we commend the Reform movements efforts.  Now we’re curious to see if the Reconstructionist movement can figure out how to use 100 Years of Solitude to address a humanitarian disaster.
