We’ve got the latest Viagra news coming straight out of Israel for you. Police seized 700,000 counterfeit Viagra pills, which help men with erectile dysfunction, at the Ashdod Port on Monday. The pills, which weighed half a ton, were hidden in boxes with furniture and would have sold for NIS 20 million, the Jerusalem Post reports.

The tables were addressed to a Palestinian Authority importer around age 30, who asked the Customs Authority for permission to release the container full of furniture and stones. But when it was sent for scanning, the customs official saw that there was no uniformity in the scanned image and physically opened the container.

The official found hundreds of unassembled TV tables in their original wrapping, with the counterfeit pills hidden inside. Colorful, decorative stones had been placed in the container to confuse the customs officials and keep them from detecting the pills.

The dealer intended to sell the pills in Israel and the Palestinian territories, endangering the health of whoever might take them.

It’s important that Israel’s Defense Ministry has the supplies it needs to keep a strong and safe military, like, of course, Viagra, the erectile dysfunction miracle drug, Haaretz reports.

Like other ministries, the Defense Ministry periodically publishes tenders in the daily press through the Government Advertising Bureau. One such tender recently published seeks 1,200 tablets of 100 mg. sildenafil citrate, the active ingredient in Viagra, to be used by Israel Defense Forces soldiers suffering from erectile dysfunction. The tender is signed by the Medical Corps, so the tablets are not meant for anyone other than IDF soldiers, such as Defense Ministry employees or people being served by the Rehabilitation Branch.

Apparently, the Defense Ministry sought out Viagra before, too. In 2005, an article was published in a Hebrew journal that stated pilots were prohibited from taking Viagra before flying because it could mess with their visual acuity— though other, more excitable senses would be quite sharp, to be sure.

Naturally, the Defense Ministry refused to comment.
