A blonde bombshell wearing a gold lamé leotard and over-the-top Xena: Warrior Princess-style accessories ditches rapper Sean Kingston–you know, the chubby Jamaican kid from the 2007 hit “Beautiful Girls”–as she jumps from a golden airplane, landing in a group of dancers gyrating in the desert. A strawberry-blonde waif in knee-high socks is carried on a man’s back all the way from the suburbs of New York to Manhattan, pausing only to lie naked on a couch and strike teasing poses in the grass while singing a quirky, uber-chic pop song. A seductive brunette femme fatale in black lingerie is lying on the floor, singing a dramatic piano ballad with a slight lisp.

No, these aren’t low-budget soft-core porn films, they’re three music videos released in the past year. And the pop harlots starring in them are none other than Israel’s latest cultural exports—nice Jewish girls with a seriously sexy twist (though honestly, you’d never know they were Jewish).

The sky-diving diva? Israeli actress and singer Meital Dohan. Born and raised in a village outside Raanana, Dohan made it all the way from the IDF Entertainment Corps to land a recurring role as Yael Hoffman on the Showtime series Weeds. She also had a role in the 2010 dramatic thriller Monogamy, alongside Rashida Jones and Chris Messina.

The Xena-esque music video is for “On Ya”—as in, “I wanna be on ya, on ya”—which was released a few months ago in the United States. It’s the second single from her upcoming debut album, I’m In Hate With Love, which boasts producers like Rami Afuni of LMFAO and Che Pope, known for his work with Dr. Dre and Eminem. In the video for her clubby first single, “Yummy”, she plays a naked boxer in red leather knee-high boots—and two superimposed hot pink censor bars—who goes around town inexplicably punching people.

The little Lolita? Model, singer, and student Sivan Meller from Haifa, who adopted the convenient stage name Petite. She modeled for a while and later donned shiny leotards and embodied her nickname to perfection as the French-whispering, keyboard-playing, underage-seeming member of the electro-pop group Terry Poison. The band opened for Depeche Mode at the Ramat Gan Stadium, showcased at SXSW festival in Austin, Texas, and spent who knows how many nights playing club gigs throughout the world.

Now she’s launching a solo career in New York while finishing her thesis in the philosophy department of Tel Aviv University. Today she’s 30 going on 13—seriously, she hasn’t aged a bit—and in her debut video, “NYC Time,” released last summer, she falls back on reliable material, playing pouty Little Girl Lost who doesn’t like to wear much. She also, apparently, isn’t fond of walking; the bulk of the video features her listlessly being carried around by a large black man, walking from a small village into New York City. The rest of the video looks like a parody of smutty French Lolita films from the 1970s, and the fact that Petite is actually closer to middle age than barely legal makes it all the more confusing.

The brunette seductress? None other than Daniela Pick from Ramat Ha-Sharon, daughter of Israel’s most famous pop-star, Tsvika Pick. Known in Israel more as a celebrity than a singer, she entered the local music scene with her older sister Sharona as the pop-duo The Pick Sisters, and the highlight of her resume so far is dating Quentin Tarantino briefly in 2009.

Her new single, “Love Me,” is her third solo offering in English, following the Shakira-styled “Yalla Yalla” (recorded in London with well-known British producer Matt Schwartz) and a contemporary R&B rendition of Haddaway’s 1993 Eurodance hit, “What is Love”—immortalized by the Will Ferrell movie, A Night At the Roxbury. In that video, however, she opted for white lingerie instead of black.

These wannabe stars are prime examples of Israel’s latest attempt at Western pop culture dominance. All three women are around 30 years old, and, since slutty dance-pop never really crossed over into the Israeli mainstream, haven’t ever made it big in their home country. Now they’re angling for fame in the United States, shunning the earthy, exotic approach of Ofra Haza, the late Israeli singer who became one of the first world-music artists to reach crossover success on the pop charts, in favor of total assimilation—and hyper-sexualization.

As Petite eloquently explained in an interview for Tel Aviv magazine Achbar Ha-Ir: “Pop and sexuality go hand in hand.” In America, at least, that seems to be the case. From Madonna to Miley, American female pop culture icons have become overwhelmingly sexier, saucier, and more scantily clad. Ever since the gift of cable brought MTV to Israel in the early 1990s, instilling dreams of international stardom in the hearts of impressionable young girls across the country, they’ve felt just as much right to the pop throne as anyone else.

However, while American pop culture is eagerly absorbed by Israeli consumers, it hasn’t yet found a proper outlet. MTV-style dance-pop never found success the Israeli market, even when recorded in Hebrew. Israeli mainstream radio prefers its female singers sensitive and heart-broken, so if you grew up on Madonna and want to sing like her, your only option is to try and repackage it for the place it came from: America. Unfortunately, though, not only are these girls trying to sell ice to eskimos, their slushies aren’t exactly high quality.

Contemporary Israeli pop singers like Ninet Tayeb and Riff Cohen, trying to make it in the European market, established sophisticated personas to set themselves apart. But in America, sex sells—and if that’s where you want to go, it seems you’d better be prepared to put out. As Dohan, Petite, and Pick show, that certainly isn’t a problem. But while these women certainly can turn heads, can they make a lasting impression?

From the moment he first appeared on Showtime’s pot-centric comedy, Weeds, Andy Botwin (Justin Kirk) has loudly and proudly flaunted his Judaism. After arriving four episodes into the series as the brother of Judah, the recently deceased husband of shiksa-turned-pot-dealing mom Nancy (Mary-Louise Parker), Andy demanded to be the center of attention, letting his sexual impulses guide him from one disaster to the next.

While the show may be best known for breaking ground in the female-anti-hero genre, (Mary-Louise Parker’s drug dealer preceded Nurse Jackie and Damages,) in recent years, it has taken some odd geographical- and plot-based twists, which the new main-title sequence humorously depicts. And while the somewhat mixed series comes to a close this Sunday after eight seasons, throughout it all, it’s been hard not to love moocher Andy, the promiscuous playboy who keeps finding his way back to his Jewish roots.

What’s most wonderfully—and unexpectedly—refreshing about Andy is his very real relationship with Judaism. Even if a segment of the companion Web series University of Andy features a common TV concept—Christmukkah—most of Andy’s Jewish experiences are far less Seth Cohen than that. When Andy enrolled in rabbinical school during the show’s second season—to escape being called up for reserve duty and sent to Iraq, of course—he was seen listening to recorded prayers and participating in communal Israeli dancing.

But in this final season, a chance meeting with a rabbi at a hospital has enabled him to get his most stable job yet, as director of spiritual life in the synagogue’s Hebrew school. Though Andy may spend most of his life acting like an irresponsible clown, he’s capable of getting serious and teaching the next generation surprisingly accurate and detailed intricacies of the Jewish faith: It’s rare to find a TV character capable of captivating pre-pubescent boys equally with a rather graphic masturbation lesson and a lecture on why the Torah is not meant to be interpreted literally.

But even Andy’s biggest fan has to acknowledge that he most frequently invokes his Judaism as a get out of jail free card. Shirking military service by entering rabbinical school was hardly a great start, and Andy’s motivations for becoming an active Jew are never pure. Even his latest job resulted from an unplanned pregnancy out of wedlock. Yet on a show filled with liars and criminals—a pot dealer, a drug cartel, and a handful of other unscrupulous, corruption-prone people—Andy is the most endearing character. Though he spent most of his stint in rabbinical school trying to sleep with admissions director Yael Hoffman (Israeli actress Meital Dohan), he came away with a renewed sense of pride and peoplehood that shows in his new academic capacity.

That’s not to suggest that Andy’s charm can get him out of every situation. He doesn’t always see things through, and he is distracted by the presence of either women or pot. He tends to get caught up in his schemes and overly attached to temporary situations, in which he and his drug-dealing family often find themselves. Yet through it all, he’s genuine: The lies he tells and the stories he makes up don’t last because his conscience gets the best of him. As he eyes and beds new women, he expresses his affection and takes a deep interest in each and every one of them. His actions may not be explicitly guided by Jewish values, but, time after time, he keeps coming back to a Jewish way of life.

Andy doesn’t purport to be the most knowledgeable Jew out there: He is the ultimate example of imperfection, and it’s hard not to root for—or relate to—someone who has good intentions and isn’t always able to live up to them. As the show nears its end, he has been looking back at his life and his decisions, demonstrating exceptional growth after eight years of marijuana, women, and bad choices. Ultimately, for Andy the ends do justify the means, and the way he got somewhere is less important than what he’s achieved, building a truly unique legacy for himself as TV’s most knowledgeable Jewish slacker.

Maybe we're helping push along the myth that Jews control media by listing our ten favorite Jews on the small screen, but in this case we're willing to take that chance.

The post The Top Ten Jews On Television appeared first on Jewcy.

In the world of television there are Jews as far the eye cans see, and the Jews grow as high as an elephant’s eye: writers, directors, producers and actors — there are Jewish names all over the small screen, with the one exception tending to be when it comes to Jewish characters. Ask anybody to name a Jew centric show barring Seinfeld and Curb Your Enthusiasm, and we wouldn’t suggest holding your breath.

With that said, Jews are represented on television; it may be mostly when the credits roll, but these are our ten favorite Jews –fictional characters or important behind the scenes people–on television.

1. Mathew Weiner (Producer/Mad Men)

We began Jews Watching Mad Men in the first place because there were Jews were watching Mad Men, in droves! During JWMM this season, conversation often flared about the unique and interesting portrayal of Jewish women on the show. Thus far, Mad Men has produced two of the most dynamic Jewish female characters on TV. Doc Faye Miller (played by Cara Buono) and Rachel Menken (played by Sons of Anarchy’s Maggie Siff) were two women that came into Don Draper’s life and made their presence known, each leaving their own special mark on Don’s already bruised psyche before their grand exit. Matthew Weiner, a former writer for The Soprano’s originally pitched Mad Men to HBO and when they turned him down, Weiner set out to make Mad Men that much better, thereby turning the network that acquired it into HBO’s biggest competition. Slowly but surely, AMC is shaping up to be just that, forcing HBO to compete for their much-coveted high brow audience.

2. Katey Sagal (Actor/Character/Sons of Anarchy)

As far as Jewish TV characters go, Gemma Teller is one of the most fleshed out, as well as one of the most unexpected when it comes to going against the grain of Jewish stereotypes. Son’s Of Anarchy is a show about an outlaw motorcycle club that draws from Shakespearean drama archetypes in a way that no show has since The Wire. Gemma Teller is the queen bee or “Head Old Lady” of the Redwood Original Chapter of The Sons Of Anarchy, perhaps not what you would expect to see at the number 2 slot on this list. One might not have even known that she was Jewish had it not been for a scene during the second season where she faces off against the leader of the local Aryan Motorcycle gang, warning him to watch his step with the anti-Semitic remarks. Gemma is a survivor, who proves herself capable of overcoming the most trying situations. Though, her number one priority, is always to protect her family. Of course, Katy Sagal is best known for her role as Peggy Bundy, perhaps the least Jewish TV character in history. She recently married Sons of Anarchy Creator, Kurt Sutter and continues to contribute her voice to Futurama.

3. Michael Stuhlbarg (Actor/Character/Boardwallk Empire)

For all the young Jewish boys who used to like to play pretend, “Mobster” was always exceptionally fun, because there were so many Jewish mobsters to choose from: tough guy maniac Bugsy Seigel to stoic and ruthless puppeteer Meyer Lansky to, of course, Arnold Rothstein, or “The Brain.” Rothstein was known for mentoring up and coming gangsters and teaching them how to dress. However, he’s best remembered for paying the Chicago Black Sox to throw the 1919 World Series (and a few great fictional representations).

On the show, Rothstein is one of the most confident calculated criminals portrayed on television since Omar from The Wire. Stuhlbarg, who studied at Julliard, was nominated for a Tony for his role in the outstandingly dark play, The Pillowman and also appeared in the infinitely Jewish film, A Serious Man. His portrayal of Rothstein, with his velvety, laid back voice, illustrious taste and urbane facade is the perfect model for the Jewish gangster of yore.

4. Allison Brie (Actress/Character/Community)

Allison Brie got her start acting at her local Jewish community center. She did a little TV work before auditioning and being chosen for the role of Trudy Campbell on Mad Men. However, it wasn’t until she began playing the role of Annie Edison, the recovered pill-popping perfectionist with doe eyes and innocent crush on everyone, that she really began to shine as a force in the TV world. She also became the new fantasy girlfriend for every Jewish boy who’s ever added his surname to Mila or Winona to see how it sounds.

5. Paul Lieberstein (Writer/Actor/The Office)

If Paul Lieberstein had his way, he’d have almost no screen time on The Office. Lieberstein, who spent years on the writing team for King Of The Hill, is not only one of the main writers on The Office but his portrayal of Toby makes for one of the most beloved small, but important roles on the show.

6. Puck From Glee (Character/Glee)

Puck from Glee, played by Mark Salling must be one of the most visible Jewish characters on television right now, and fortunately, in writing him, Glee scribes don’t bow to the pressure of writing him as “a Jew in a box.” The character of Noah Puckerman is a tough rebel without a cause, who plays football and constantly has epiphanies that he needs to be a better Jew or only date other Jews. Hell, he’s probably the most believable Jew on TV in that respect.

7. Fred Savage (Director/It’s Always Sunny In Philiadelphia/Party Down)

Any child of the 80’s who aspired to be an actor, worshiped Fred Savage. Not only did he star in The Wizard, the first and only awesome video game movie, but he starred in the best coming of age TV show of all time, The Wonder Years, and lets not forget Little Monsters with Howie Mandell. Now, Savage’s efforts go towards directing some of the best comedies on TV. Savage has come to hone a very unique and identifiable style through his work in Party Down and It’s Always Sunny In Philadelphia; juxtaposing off beat comedy and biography style drama in a way that nobody else can. Early episodes of Party Down perfectly illustrate what has become, “the Savage Style,” or “Savage verite.”

8. Andy Botwin (Character/Weeds)

Without Andy Botwin, Weeds would hardly be worth watching. Andy’s non-stop neurosis and constant confidence completes the show and makes for a character we can all relate to, managing to stay charming even when your want ring his neck. Watching him go from a hardcore pothead slacker to studying to become a rabbi to living off the grid has made for reliable TV fun. The question is, will he and Nancy ever get it on?

9. Ginnifer Goodwin (Actress/Big Love)

Ginnifer Goodwin is a Tennessee born Jew who’s first big role came in the movie Walk the Line playing Johnny Cash’s first wife, but it’s her role as Margene Heffman on Big Love, that has made her a standout. Margene is not only one of the most dynamic characters on the tube, but she has one of the most prominent arcs of any character on TV. Starting as a naïve babysitter turned third wife, she’s become much more assertive in her role as lowest wife of the totem pole, able to identify where her power in the relationship lies and how far her charm can take her. However, her little tryst with her husband’s son this past season has put her in a precarious situation. Big Love may be the most well acted show on television right now and Goodwin’s skills are a major part of that.

10. Howard Wolowitz/Simon Hellberg (Actor/Character/The Big Bang Theory)

The Character, Howard Wolowitz (played by Simon Hellberg), reinforces every possible Jewish stereotype. He is a sex-obsessed nerdy momma’s boy, who often finds himself helping his mother in and out of the bathtub. He’s willing to do just about anything to get laid, even if it means wrecking a multi million dollar government robot and his sleaziness towards women is damn near cartoony.. Luckily, the actor and writers have the tact to make these flaws funny, without being a offensive, dishing it out to everyone equally, and giving Howard enough self-awareness to be realistic and charming. Besides, who could possibly deny I that if there are two things Jewish men like, it’s sex and brisket, what else is new?
