In most of the world, especially in the US, the greeting card and candy industries hijacked the month for the Valentine’s Day holiday. But here at Jewcy, we’re kicking off February with a gastronomical twist. Sheila Lukins, author of Ten: All the Foods We Love, Ten Recipes for Each is spending this week guest blogging in Jewcy‘s Book Club. As part of her week on Jewcy, we’re giving away five copies of her book! It’s easy to participate: All you have to do is comment on one of her posts. At the end of the week, we’ll pick the best five comments and contact the commenters to let them know they’ve won. That’s it! Just leave a comment, get a book! Have a look at today’s post on vegetable soup, and keep checking Jewcy, or Sheila’s profile, for her most recent post.

Lukins is a graduate of Le Courdon Bleu and founded the well-known New York gourmet food shop, The Silver Palate. She also co-authored the famous "Silver Palate" book series. Her book is a collection of recipes featuring ten variations on some of our favorite dishes.

Jewcy received an urgent message from Jonathan Kesselman of World Wide Media Conspiracy about the horrors of a second Holocaust:

Today is International Holocaust Remembrance Day. There are 7 – 8 films in current release that deal with the atrocities of the Holocaust. One of them deals with Defiant Jews in the woods and stars an Aryan man from England… so, just ignore that one for now. This film is different. The short video you are about to see will shock you. There is a Genocide happening right now that you are most likely not aware of, and it is affects us all.

Please help! Watch the film and get involved.

Now, take a look at how infamous Holocaust denier Bishop Richard Williamson has just been reinstated by the Pope. Remember, those trees died for Jesus.

In this historic year, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day uncannily falls on the day before we inaugurate America’s first African-American president. On August 28, 1963, Dr. King gave his famous "I Have a Dream" speech. In another interesting twist of fate, on the same exact day 45 years later, the Democratic Party officially became the first major American political party to nominate an African-American (or anyone with a minority background, for that matter) candidate for President. And on November 4, 2008, in what many called a realization of Dr. King’s dream, Barack Obama was elected the 44th President of the United States.

With just one week to go until the Inauguration (you know, the historic one, Barack Obama, first African-American president, blah blah blah) everyone is still trying to get in on the action. I was even considering making a pilgrimage to America’s political holy land until I realized I’d have to sleep in a cold car. But I may be in luck! That is, if I have the patience to room with a brooding Republican on the eve of a Democratic high holiday. One ad on Cragislist just goes to show that profilt has no prejudice:

In a search of a room in DC so that you can spend Jan. 20 standing in the bitter winter cold with thousands of like-minded souls watching the historic transfer of power from one Harvard grad to another? Look no further. Me: Heartless, greedy right-wing oppressive type looking to make a buck. You: Obama’s election was Christmas/your first kiss/May Day all wrapped into one. You dutifully wore his button — which you have yet to remove — contributed money to his campaign from your non-profit job and chanted "yes we can" as if it were the 11th commandment. A strange void now exists in your life and — like an old hippie looking to recapture the spirit of Woodstock — you are undertaking a pilgramage to Washington for one last gulp of the Kool-Aid. Along with my bedroom you will have access to the house’s many amenities including cable television (not that you watch much TV) for viewing Keith Olberman’s latest unhinged rants and CNN in high-def. Wireless internet means that the Huffington Post and DailyKos are only a click away on your MacBook. American flags and other patriotic paraphernalia in the room can be removed upon request. The house is located in the diverse neighborhood of Adams Morgan with people of many different skin pigmentations that will allow you to revel in your tolerance. Rest assured, however, that this diversity does not extend to ideology and that you are sure to march lock-step with the prevailing sentiment ensuring that your most strongly held beliefs remain unchallenged. Easily accessible subway and bus stops will help ensure a minimal carbon footprint while fair trade coffee is never more than a few steps away at any number of independently-owned establishments. Nearby non-chain bookstores similarly mean that tomes such as Mao’s Little Red Book, Chomsky’s latest masterpiece or additional copies of The Audacity of Hope can be easily purchased either for yourself or as early holiday shopping. Rather than state a price I am requesting that you bid on this fabulous opportunity to ensure profit maximization on my part so that I can better weather the Bush Recession.

If you visited Jewcy in the past couple of weeks, the sheer abundance of the word "Gaza" in our headlines probably gave you the impression we’d been bought out by Ted Turner. Or, if you hide under a rock during the holiday season like yours truly, you were completely bewildered. I thought rounding up Jewcy’s coverage of the recent disarray in the Middle East, along with some background info, would prove helpful for those who were left in the dust of the Israeli tanks breezing into Gaza.

Back in June, Egypt brokered an informal and rather nugatory six-month truce between Israel and Gaza. Throughout the summer, Hamas continued firing rockets into southern Israel, and the country’s border with Gaza was repeatedly violated. While Americans celebrated the election of their first African-American president, Israeli Defense Forces entered Gaza to destroy a tunnel used to traffic weapons, casting further doubt on the truce’s efficacy. Cross-border raids and attacks expectedly increased, leading up to the decision to take the already comatose truce off life-support in late December.

A new, twenty-four hour truce was called, again at the behest of Egyptian mitigators, to put a damper on the rapidly intensifying exchange of fire. Yet, as soon as it expired, six rockets were fired into the Negev and clashes insued along the Israel-Gaza border fence. This, along with a downpour of dozens of mortar shells launched by Gaza fighters on Christmas Eve, prompted a heavy Israeli offensive.

On December 27, Israel began a series of intense air strikes throughout the Gaza strip, killing upward of 200 and wounding countless others. Strikes continued unabated the next day, as the international community began voicing its concern. Edmund Standing posted on what he sees as blatantly biased press coverage of the attacks. Meanwhile, Shira Danan gave a voice to those discomforted by Israel’s course of action.

As attacks roared on, Jewcy correspondents Paul Widen and Haim Watzman both reported from Jerusalem. Widen updated us on the politics inside Israel while giving unique insight on how Israelis are responding to the offensive. Watzman is hosting his daughter’s fellow students who have been evacuated from Sapir College, which is located near Sderot, a southern Israeli city within missle range of Gaza.

Jewcy editor Michael Weiss posted an essay on why Hamas is a political failure. Meanwhile, Tel-Aviv declared the area around Gaza a "closed military zone," the Gazan death toll rose to over 350, and Jewcy received a letter from Beersheva.

By New Year’s Eve, a solution had yet to be reached by the UN. The Gazan death toll reached 400, while the Israeli death toll remained in the single digits. Gershom Gorenberg reported on the innocent children caught in the crossfire of a childish conflict, the effects of which, he says, Israel has not fully understood.

Shira Danan gave us some first-hand accounts from Gaza on New Year’s Day. Israel denied an EU truce requesting forty-eight hours for the delivery of humanitarian aid into Gaza. Deaths in the embattled region brushed 420, while the Israeli body count broke ten.

On January 2, foreigners were ushered out of Gaza while Israeli officials begin planning a ground invasion. Andrew Bostom posted an essay displaying Hamas’ abhorrence of the Jews.

On January 3, tanks rolled into Gaza to begin a ground offensive. Neal Ungerleider reported from the "bubble" of Tel-Aviv. Howard Schweber contemplated the value of pragmatism in the tango between Israel and Hamas.

By January 5, the EU decided it was about time to send an envoy to broker a solution. French President Nicolas Sarkozy began a tour of the region in search of a long lost truce. Michael Weiss wrote a post pointing out that Hamas is not just a threat to the Jews, but to Islam and Palestinians as well.

The most recent news is all the more disparaging. By now, Gazans have buried over 500 of their compatriots. Haim Watzman posted on the moral choices involved in the war on the very day Israeli attacks hit refugees outside a UN school. Hamas continues to launch rockets into Israel. The US has only recently begun voicing its concern for a ceasefire.

I hope this post has helped catch you up on the exploding conflict in the Middle East. Let’s hope there isn’t much more to follow.
