to embrace the full spectrum of experience offered by the Second World
War. Operating as a combat photographer under his own orders Lieutenant Miller photographed
everything of interest that he encountered, from boredom to horror.
Those images document an integral part of the American wartime
experience and are secured in the National Archives in Washington D.C.
What set Miller’s work apart from many other war photographers was in
part a peculiar empathy, whether creating images of our own soldiers or
Japanese survivors of the atomic bomb; in his work he strove to “climb
inside those people, and look through their eyes.”

H.S. Friedman, has worn many hats in his life including scientist, ?mathematician, writer and artist.

His mathematics and scientific pursuits are grounded in the world of numbers and facts where we hope that this is an objective, right answer. The truth is that there are no right answers, just approximations to a greater, more complicated story.??

He had formal art training at Binghamton University as well as the School of Visual Arts. His work has been displayed in numerous locations in Baltimore, Washington and New York with a recent exhibit at the United Nations in New York, an ongoing presentation at the Prince Street Café in Nolita and at angelsandstardust.com. The website’s name, "Angels and Stardust" is also the title of an art and poetry book published by the author.??

His art swirls around a series of styles with the singular goal of making one stop to think, to ask questions, and challenge oneself about the nature of life. Through symbolism in the representational pieces as well as color contrast techniques in the abstract pieces, he seeks to develop a deeper understanding of how we perceive life and its elements. The paintings are mostly acrylic on canvas though other mediums seep their way into the art occasionally.

As an adolescent I became aware of the expectations put on my male existence, from family, peers and popular culture. Boys would be men, and that meant in my situation I was to grow up, be physically strong, stoic, and self-reliant. Fifteen years since my inception into official manhood, I reflect on what this early training meant to instill in me; to what use in this post/modern, postindustrial society. I make art which explores this theme, the American masculine ideal as a construct of paradoxical ideas of history and popular culture.

In my work I incorporate imagery which I was trained to give male associations; fishing lures, bullets, guns, and erotic imagery, etc. I am interested in their ironic beauty and personal associated memories; what they represent, and how they fit in the historical ideal of manhood. To question this, I often utilize animal symbolism, specifically the prey/predatory relationship to illustrate the idea of the male as powerful and weak, aggressive yet vulnerable.

Through collage, sense layering, and strong contrast I assemble selected old photographs, symbolic animal imagery and objects of loaded meaning. By creating layers of pattern as a metaphor of emotional and psychological fronts, I conceal key content. Through this approach, I intend to mask and obscure the learnt and instinctual emotions, desires and thoughts which have subjugated and conformed male individuality and identity. Many of these ideals are rooted in a specific historical accumulation of beliefs, while others are simply instinctual.

Within myself, a nihilist agression and romantic acceptance of these ideas exist as a result of the tension between my personal sense of moral, biological and intellectual bias. As an indivisual, I question which I believe and reject, and thus react as an artist.

I came to photography quite by accident. I was out of high school, no job,
no prospects, and was hitchhiking across the country. In Abilene a woman
picked me up. “Where you going young man?” “Seeing the country,” I said.
I ended up in Kilgore, Texas, as her assistant in her photography studio.
We did everything but bar mitzvahs; no Jews in Kilgore. I learned
photography from the ground up. Too confining, though. Had to move on.
Wanderlust, something I’ve always had. Maybe its kept me from becoming
famous. Have this need for the perfect picture, the perfect scene, the
perfect sunset. Haven’t found any of them yet, but keep looking.
Photography has been good to me. Met kings, queens, and presidents. I’ve
never been able to settle down in one place, and I’ve never developed one
“artistic style”. The best you could say is inconsistent and peripatetic.
Can’t worry about gallery based art world. I simply try to see beauty in
everything. Got to keep moving, place to place, style to style. Hope you
guys enjoy my work.

You can view some more of my work here.

A complex and quixotic urban animal found ranging across southeast New
York City, the Brooklynite has obtained a sort of mythological status,
representing the "you tawkin’ to me?" attitude for which the city is
world-renowned. For over three years, writer Anthony LaSala and
photographer Seth Kushner trekked tirelessly across the borough,
documenting these charismatic characters in THE BROOKLYNITES, a
collection of images, interviews, and essays.

Kushner and LaSala, native Brooklynites themselves, sought out the
famous and the nameless, current residents and former inhabitants,
providing a profoundly comprehensive portrait of both the metropolis
and its denizens. Featuring the likes of Paul Auster, Spike Lee, Steve
Buscemi, Rosie Perez, Sufjan Stevens, John Turturro, Casey Spooner,
Steve Schirripa, Matisyahu, and Jonathan Lethem-as well as local
heroes-THE BROOKLYNITES features figures from the widely diverse
neighborhoods of the city’s most populous borough: Brooklyn Heights,
Bay Ridge, Bedford-Stuyvesant, Bensonhurst, Boerum Hill, Brighton
Beach, Brownsville, Bushwick, Canarsie, Carroll Gardens, Clinton Hill,
Coney Island, DUMBO, Dyker Heights, East New York, Flatbush, Flatlands,
Fort Greene, Gowanus, Gravesend, Greenpoint, Manhattan Beach, Marine
Park, Midwood, Mill Basin, Park Slope, Prospect Heights, Red Hook,
Sheepshead Bay, Sunset Park, and Williamsburg.

With a population of 2.5 million people, Brooklyn is one of
the most celebrated locales in all the world. Its landmarks (The
Brooklyn Bridge, Greenwood Cemetery), renowned neighborhoods (Coney
Island, Park Slope), history (The Brooklyn Dodgers) and institutions
(Brooklyn Academy of Music, Prospect Park) are recognized in every
corner of the globe while its stories and legends have been recounted
in hundreds of famous novels (A TREE GROWS IN BROOKLYN, MOTHERLESS
BROOKLYN, LAST EXIT TO BROOKLYN), television shows (The Cosby Show),
theater productions (BKLYN the musical) and films (Saturday Night
Fever, Crooklyn). THE BROOKLYNITES gives readers an all-inclusive tour
of the "home to everyone from everywhere": Brooklyn, New York.
