Here’s an early Chanukah present: Jenny Slate and Chris Evans are officially back together! Slate Magazine reported that Slate (how fun is that to say?) is resuming her relationship with Captain America, after the pair met on the set of Gifted and dated for 10 months last year.

Jenny Slate is possibly the nicest and funniest Jewish comedian on the scene, known for her starring role in the “abortion comedy” Obvious Child and her stint on Parks and Recreation as the insufferable Mona Lisa Saperstein. She and Chris Evans, an Avengers actor with superhero abs and a shortage of upper lip, have been flirting over Twitter since early November, sparking rumors that the two were dating again.

Aside from the obvious thrill of having one of the “Four Hot Chrisses” potentially join the Tribe, there are several reasons to cheer on this couple. For starters, Slate makes Evans sound like a real mensch in this Vulture interview:

“Chris is truly one of the kindest people I’ve ever met, to the point where sometimes I would look at him and it would kind of break my heart,” she says. “He’s really vulnerable, and he’s really straightforward. He’s like primary colors. He has beautiful, big, strong emotions, and he’s really sure of them. It’s just wonderful to be around. His heart is probably golden-colored, if you could paint it.”

If anyone deserves the company of the multitalented, kickass feminist Jenny Slate, it’s an earnest 36 year-old who organizes board game nights, owns a singing dog, and appreciates her taste in turtlenecks.

Evans is also helping Slate move on from her ex-husband Dean Fleischer-Camp, an editor-director whose main accomplishment is co-creating “Marcel the Shell” with Slate. In my (potentially unpopular) opinion, it’s time for the talking clam to retire, and Evans may prove distraction enough for Slate and Fleischer-Camp’s collaborative energy to ebb.

Either way, if you have even a shred of support for the “Slevans” romance, please devote yourself to the cause of coming up with a new moniker for the couple. The nickname for these delightful people sounds like a sewer creature or a nose-picking bully, and I’m confident the Jewish community can improve on it. Captain Obvious, perhaps?

If you, like me, enjoy learning about how Jewish geography extends to cool Jewish lady celebrities, you’ll enjoy the following tidbit: Mayim Bialik, of The Big Bang Theory (and this great video), and Rachel Bloom, better known as Rebecca Bunch on Crazy Ex-Girlfriend, are apparently buddies. Watered by some mayim, their friendship began to bloom last April, when Bialik interviewed Bloom for her website. A couple weeks ago, they had a coffee date, but it was interrupted by a fan who seemed more interested in Rachel than in Mayim. Personally, I’d like to tag along with both of them. What a squad.

Speaking of funny, outspoken Jewish feminist actresses, remember how Rachel Bloom used to be roommates with Broad City’s Ilana Glazer? Naturally, they take amazing selfies. Looking at them, I was reminded of the episode from last season of Girls when Hannah Horvath (Lena Dunham’s character) gets a visit from a college friend, played amazingly by Jenny Slate. What if the four of them were all friends?!

And in case you forgot, Ilana is (distantly) related to Abbi Jacobson in real life. Which makes the sexual nature of Abbi and Ilana’s friendship (mostly on Ilana’s side) on the show a little awkward.

But most Ashkenazi Jews are basically related to each other anyway (though unlike most Ashkenazi Jews, all six of these ladies competed in Jewcy‘s ongoing “Jewish Celebrity March Madness“). So I’m sure it’s only a matter of time before all these yiddishe mavens of comedy discover that I am their long-lost cousin and want to be best friends with me too.

And whom have we cast in our fantasy films?

The post Jewish Women in Biopics? Part 2 appeared first on Jewcy.

In our last post, we looked at biopics about Jewish women (or lack thereof). It was frustrating how few Jewish women are the subjects of films, and how even fewer of their portrayers are Jewish as well.

So, we decided to fix that. Here are other fascinating Jewish women ripe for depiction on screen, and ideas for Jewish actors that could easily star in these projects:

1. Clara Lemlich— Ever heard of the New York shirtwaist strike of 1909? It was Lemlich who brought the bubbling conflict to a boil, in an extremely climactic (dare we say cinematic?) speech (in Yiddish!) at a labor meeting that convinced the crowd to strike— a high point in her long career advocating for workers’ rights.

Who should play her: Clara actually has a pretty close resemblance to Hailee Steinfeld, and the Oscar-nominated Actor showed in True Grit that she can play a young person who has been made mature beyond her years from hardship.

Heck, Steinfeld could also play Rose Schneiderman, who coined the phrase “bread and roses,” and was somewhere on the LGBTQ spectrum (she had a female partner for much of her life). Gertrude Stein was not the only queer Jewish woman, people!

2. Shulamith Firestone— Firestone’s story has all the makings of a great film, from her transformation from Yeshiva girl to secular artist, to her powerful, sometimes controversial work in the feminist movement, to her struggles with mental illness.

Who should play her: Lola Kirke. Kirke is perhaps less well-known than her sister Jemima (a star of Girls), but she’s had some pretty hefty roles already, including in Gone Girl. Put her in a pair of round glasses and watch her go.

3. Rosalind Franklin— Franklin‘s scientific career was in some ways tragic, partially due to her tragic death at age 37 of cancer, and partially because of her relegation to obscurity despite the hugely important work she did in exploring the molecular structure of DNA (these days, there is even some controversy on whether or not Watson and Crick appropriated her work).

Who should play her: Mara Wilson. You may be going, “Wait, Matilda?” But Wilson has a vibrant (if intentionally indie) career today, as a writer, comedian, and, yes, actor. She’s still got it, and with a convincing British accent, this would be a chance to shine. (Also, she has an amazing Twitter).

4. Doña Gracia Nasi— Remember when the child of Inquisition survivors rose up to become one of the most successful merchants in Renaissance Europe? Remember when she used her fortune to rescue Jews from Portugal, build Jewish communities, and support Jewish scholarship? No? Well, then the time for a biopic is ripe. (She actually appears as a character on a Turkish TV show, but that’s not nearly enough.)

Who should play her: Neve Campbell is of Sephardic heritage, a good age to play Nasi, and has the acting chops. If Campbell can handle the Underwoods on House of Cards, she can handle the Inquisition. Campbell is actually a practicing Catholic, but she identifies ethnically as Jewish, and this would be an interesting twist in playing a woman whose family had once faked a Catholic conversion to survive.

5. Me and all my friends— This is just an excuse to cast Jenny Slate as anyone I know, and maybe anyone you know. I don’t know who’s going to end up famous enough for a filmed account of their life, but Slate is brazenly Jewish enough, funny, has a sensitive side (Obvious Child is amazing) and really feels like a peer. Slate for life.

We conclude with a special shout-out to commenter Greg M., for suggesting:

Like the meet cute Rom Com “Hannah + Martin, The Hannah Arendt Story” starring Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson as Martin Heidegger, a right-leaning morally ambiguous philosopher and Alison Brie as Hannah Arendt, a foxy student of moral issues. They Kant help themselves from falling in love!

The hilarious Jenny Slate—former SNL-er, Jean Ralphio’s twin sister Mona Lisa on Parks and Recreation, half of the dream team behind Marcel the Shell—is back with a new web series over at Jash, Sarah Silverman’s YouTube channel.

‘Catherine,’ billed as a story in 12 parts, plays like a Twin Peaks-style drama, though nothing really seems to happen in any of the scenes. But we love Slate, and we’ll watch pretty much anything she does:

Ira takes Brooklyn, and delivers a live show. We also give you the first "Very Ira" Christmas card.

In the interest of providing some holiday cheer to the masses, Ira hits the stage in Brooklyn with the intention of filling an hour with Xmas jokes, a genre previously untapped outside of a Scholastic book order form. Hanging around a schoolyard in the least David Wooderson way, producer Jonathan Menjivar captures some great audio of 3rd graders pulling nonexistent Santa jokes out of their butts, making the candid prologue the most amusing act in the episode. A particularly poignant comparison of the Christmas tree and the menorah is the uproarious highlight–“it’s funny ’cause it’s true,” says Ira. Because I’d like to dodge a fate on a blacklist among comedians similar to Job’s with the Magicians’ Alliance, this episode’s content chockfull of set-ups and punchlines is untouchable. Like a club manager in the Bloomburg’s Gamechangers episode on Jon Stewart reflected, a room at the mercy of a comedian trying out new content is a black plague that Ira uncharacteristically exposes us to. Yet, the awkwardness that each comedian exudes in facing the challenge of making up Christmas hahas is not out of place on the This American Life soapbox in the 2010 installment of TAL’s Comedians of Christmas Comedy Special.

Act 1: Oh my god, I love Austin!

Comedian Wyatt Cenac tells a tale of church-humping do-gooders spreading mitzvahs at a Texas prison. The eerie melange of cheeriness symptomatic of the season and the somberness of the joke’s setting is exactly the Zombies’ Care of Cell 44. An unfortunately lackluster punchline makes a second listen with lesser expectations of the joke an A-OK act.

Act 2: WE LOVE THEM

Deadpan makes this act a quirky treat as Edith Zimmerman tries her hand at the theme of the hour. With all the kidcentric setups, minds wander back to the lines of a deadpan great:

“I went to the park and saw this kid flying a kite. The kid was really excited. I don’t know why. That’s what they’re supposed to do. Now if he had had a chair on the other end of that string, I would have been impressed.” Mitch Hedburg

Act 3: I tried so hard not to laugh, cause I was on Jesus’s team

Mike Birbiglia! This holiday delight trumps dim sum any day. His routine is the funniest, and also the most Jesusy as he reminisces on being an altar boy. Listening to Catholics tell church jokes is probably like the experience of a goy exploring Jewcy, a whole lot of going with it, in the hopes of finding a universal funny on the other side. And of course, Birbiglia pulls through.

Act 4: She’s not my girlfriend.

Gabe Liedman and Jenny Slate, two Jews in the media try their hand at Christmas. Slate, most recently noted for her presence in Bored to Death (our top show of twenty ten) is also top notch in the duo, a team with energies that feed off each other, creating a shmoozy atmosphere in which they are the type A’s at a cocktail party where we can’t help but get sloshed and laugh along.

Act 5: And like a human, he passes out.

Comedy Central Presents vet Julian McCullough seems to channel the lovechild of Palahniuk and Sedaris onstage. His story of Christmas displaced is almost too Jerry Springer to be funny, but isn’t it in the hottest messes of life that comedy reaches a most potent concentration?

Act 6: I still love you.

Always milking his resources, Ira adds to the live mix a performance of a Christmas original by Dave Hill and Doug Gillard while the credits roll. Emotive lyrics echo the show’s underlying binary of misanthropia and Christmas cheer. An approving crowd gives it up with Obamafan-like cheers at the host’s final, “Tune in next week, I’m Ira Glass.” That cathartic energy that reveals itself only at live events reminds that we are one big happy TALian family, the warmest Christmas sweater of all being of course that we never have to talk to each other.

To a very Ira Christmas! To celebrate the time of year filled with cheer, Chinese, and Chivas, spread this Ira Glass Christmas card to spread the love for the tribe this season. Staying home as capitalism shuts down for Santa, I think I’ll pick up a warm cuppa Ira. Love, Bambi
