“I’m not stopping until my actual dick goes gold,” raps Lil Dicky, the Jewish comedy-rapper whose first album Professional Rapper and two of its singles have each sold over 500,000 copies. The video for his song “Pillow Talking” has almost 13 million views on YouTube, and he’s started working on a TV show that’s loosely based on his life. It seems like all of the 29 year-old’s dreams have come true. But despite all that he’s accomplished, there’s one thing Dicky has yet to achieve: finding love.

The talented Lil Dicky, who rap battled Hitler (and won), is enlisting the help of fans through a Kickstarter campaign. In order to continue making the music and videos we know and love, LD describes what he needs the cash for in a short, but totally entertaining video:

Pretty simple. Though it only opened on Wednesday, the campaign has already made over $37,000, but LD is looking to make $70,000. If donations continue at this rate, we don’t think he’ll have any problem getting what he needs. And, it’s not surprising really—for each donation increment, LD offers a gift; they start out small and awesome, getting bigger and stranger as they go (see: pay your own way to meet LD in California for dinner). Maybe we’ll start our own Kickstarter to fund a flight to the West Coast.

We’re kind of obsessed with Lil Dicky, the cheeky young rapper whose very public goal is to represent the “upper-middle class on his frail, Jewish shoulders.”

His newest music video, for “Jewish Flow,” is here, and it’s more provocative than anything we’ve seen from him so far. In it, the year is 1944 and Dicky’s got a rap battle to win—against Hitler. As the video opens, we see Dicky prepping himself backstage “Yo, Dicky,” an unseen friend prompts, “You sure you want to battle, dude? He’s been killin’ Jews.”

Superimposed onto very real Nazi rally footage, Dicky and Hitler walk through the saluting crowd before getting on stage. Then off Dicky goes, rapping into the face of the Nazi leader.

Wearing a “Fuck Hitler” t-shirt, Dicky raps that he’s got “that Auschwitz sick gas chamber kinda shit.” He’s also getting with German women, slinging sausage links, and dunking on Nazis in a pick-up game. It appears that Dicky is working through some identity issues, rather unsubtly.

Still, he’s not the first rapper to reference Hitler in a song. In Nas’ “Revolution Warfare,” rapper Lake posits that he’s “like a modern day Hitler.” And in 2Pac’s “Got My Mind Made Up,” Method Man raps that he’s “like Hitler, sticking up Jews with German Lugers.”

I asked Dicky about the video’s emphasis on Hitler and Nazi imagery. For him, it’s similar to how Kanye and other rappers reference slavery in their lyrics, he explained in an email. “You take a past social injustice (i.e. slavery, the Holocaust) and use it as a comparison point to highlight a current place of social prominence,” he wrote.

He gets why Jewish listeners might be offended by non-Jewish rappers bringing up Hitler, though he admits (not so shockingly) that he’s not easily offended:

In theory, people should probably stick to their own lane (I don’t think myself talking about slavery would be smart), but I personally don’t care what anyone else does in music. Self-expression is what it is, people should do what they want, as long as they’re willing to deal with consequences.

No consequences for Dicky yet, though: “Jewish Flow” has more than 50,000 YouTube views. What do you think of the video?

If Woody Allen was a rapper obsessed with masturbation, he’d be Lil Dicky. “In an era where rap is dominated by racial, social, and economic minorities,” Dicky’s website bio reads, “LD decided to put the upper-middle class on his frail, Jewish shoulders.”

It’s not a joke, though; he’s totally serious. And not everyone’s happy about this career turn—namely, his parents:

“Honestly, I never thought I’d be a rapper. Just saying that out loud sounds weird to me. I’m a rapper. Who grows up to become a rapper? That’s just not really a respected career path in my neck of the woods. My mom’s not thrilled, for example.”

Dicky’s a different kind of rapper: the lanky white guy who is fully aware of and embraces his privileged life, his lack of game, and his enduring insecurity. Unlike Drake, who keeps telling us how he started from nothing (we get it, Drizzy), Dicky pulls no punches about his comfortable upbringing in suburban Philadelphia (“With outstanding parents, and a great backyard for grilling, wiffle ball, and tanning”) and not-so-hardcore musical beginnings (“When he was 14, he opened up for the R&B group 112 at his overnight camp. He’s been rapping ever since”).

The craziest part is that he’s actually talented. He has a smooth voice, good timing, and clever lines. Sure, most of them are completely offensive and so gross I’d never want my mom to listen to them, but objectively speaking, he’s a pretty good rapper.

For Dicky, Jewishness is a badge of honor (and cover art), a schtick that’s so much a part of his act it’s almost hard to call it schtick. What it definitely is, though, is provocative and attention-getting: In the very NSFW “Jewish Flow,” he says his rhymes are “sicker than the Holocaust” (“Jewish Flow” was removed from YouTube, but Dicky won an appeal):

 
The also NSFW “Ham,” meanwhile, has lines about college and his synagogue. Dicky jarringly refers to himself using an anti-Semitic slur, defending its use by comparing it to black rappers using the N-word. Whether for Dicky it’s artistic reappropriation or something less sincere will likely be debated by commenters (and the ADL) internet-wide.

But he’s sharp, and doesn’t shy away from commenting on his strange, privileged vantage point in the music scene (and in life more generally). In the video for “White Dude,” released online yesterday, Dicky points out the absurdity of life as a white male.
