StyleLikeU, started by a mother and a daughter, is “a multimedia platform that honors individuals with authentic personal style.” Elisa and Lily attempt to show that fashion isn’t just about the price tag or the brand name; rather that it’s the “foundation for one’s identity.”

In November, they produced a video looking into the fashion of Orthodox Jews. With no weird American Apparel glamorization, the documentary provides insight from Orthodox men and women, illuminating the reasons behind dressing uniformly, wearing wigs, and how it all connects to spirituality.

Moshe Hecht, a singer/songwriter, describes what abstaining from secular dress allows for religiously.

“In society today in America or in the world, very much of how you are perceived is how you are dressed and when you have a group of people who basically dress the same it’s creating an opportunity to find your individuality beyond the actual physical dress that they’re wearing sort of forces you to sort of build that character and then people start to perceive people on a much deeper level.”

Though the video is quite long (16 minutes), it’s worth taking a look, if not just to see the interviewer annoyingly ask, “What is the thing with the sheet?” when discussing sex. Myths aside, there’s a stock of nice quotes.

Hearing problems can be prevented the earlier they’re diagnosed. But a new study by Tel Aviv University researcher, Dr. Sarah Ingber, shows that six out of 10 ultra-Orthodox Israeli women do not bring their babies to the doctor for free hearing checks, Haaretz reports. Members of the Knesset are forming a campaign in order to raise awareness within the ultra-Orthodox community.

Deputy Education Minister MK Avraham Wortzman (Bayit Yehudi) announced the opening of a publicity campaign to promote awareness among the public and in state institutions of the need to take babies for hearing tests. “A child who is not diagnosed when young will face 10 times the problems of other children,” he said.

Apparently, in the Negev, the wait to get into clinics can be quite long, preventing mothers from getting their child the tests they need.

Dr. Orly Hertzberg, the ministry’s head of clinical communications, said that the wait at Soroka University Medical Center in Beersheba is “no longer than three months.” She promised, however, that the ministry would act to shorten it.

Hopefully, with campaigning and new efforts, the frequency of testing will increase and the waits for clinics will decrease.

The most recent news dividing ultra-Orthodox and secular Israelis is the law by the Education Ministry allowing state-run religious schools to ban sex education, prohibiting an entire textbook chapter dealing with reproduction and sexually transmitted diseases, YNet reports. Women’s rights activists are incensed, stating that just because one group wears burkas and the other bikinis, they each need to know the facts about sex.

“This is completely ridiculous,” Israeli parliamentarian Michal Rozin of the left-wing Meretz party told The Media Line. “We need to know how our bodies work and the way children come into the world. The religious education (sector) fails to understand that children already know about this from the Internet and other places.”

Well, we all saw how well abstinence-only education worked here in the United States.
