The New York Post reported this morning that disgraced designer John Galliano, who recently entered ADL-sanctioned sartorial rehab at Oscar de la Renta’s famed fashion house, was spotted during fashion week dressed suspiciously like a Hasidic man—peyos, black hat and all.

I’m apparently not the only one who thought his outfit seemed more deranged Willy Wonka than pious Hasid. The ADL stepped in, calling the Post story a “a ridiculous, absurd distortion.” According to ADL National Director Abraham H. Foxman:

There is no truth to their accusation that John Galliano was dressed in Hasidic garb, and anyone familiar with the dress of traditional Orthodox Jews should not mistake what Galliano is wearing in the photograph as “Hasidic garb.” Hasidim do not wear fedora hats, pinstripe pants, blue jackets or an ascot tie.

“He has spent hours with me and with others in the European Jewish community, including rabbis and Holocaust scholars, in an effort to better understand himself and to learn from his past mistakes. He is trying very hard to atone,” Foxman added.

Forget fashion week—this season’s sartorial drama involves rabbis and skinny jeans.

As if the tension between hipsters and Haredim in Williamsburg wasn’t enough, an edict released by a group of Haredi rabbis, including the son of Rabbi Ovadia Yosef, bans their male constituents from wearing tight pants. Clearly, they don’t believe skinny jeans and True Religion have much to do with each other.
 
The letter encourages men to “uphold the sanctity of the camp,” and also includes the apothegm, “The clothes of a person are an indication of his character.” The other side of the letter features an image of Haredi rabbis of yesteryear sporting loose-fitting clothing.
 
This does not bode well for jeggings.
