What does a movie about sex-crazed, abusive nuns featuring a slew of big-name celebrities have to do with Judaism? Not much on the surface, but it should come as no surprise that proper Hollywood Catholic sex comedy wouldn’t be complete without its share of Jews.

Ah, Jemima Kirke and Michael Mosberg! Glam-Jewy-indie couple extraordinaire! You either want to be them, or you— wait, no, you pretty much just want to be them. That’s the only option.

First, we saw the inside of their Brooklyn home and read about their Shabbat dinners. Now, a new slideshow up at Refinery 29 provides an intimate glimpse into their 2009 wedding. Each photo is accompanied by commentary from Kirke, and first few slides—in which she describes falling in love with Mosberg—are pretty swoony:

I loved his gentility, but his kindness was what struck me. He had this patience and stoicism; I had never met anyone like him… He just felt so much more awesome than any guy I’d ever dated. Every guy I dated before had been abusive and made me feel like shit. I was like, “Wow, this just might be the person I deserve.”

The traditional, Orthodox Jewish ceremony took place at the bride’s mother’s beach house, under a “driftwood chuppah covered in flowers.” Kirke was untraditionally—but gloriously—pregnant. She wore a rad vintage Jill Stuart dress which she purchased a few days before the wedding for $200, and immediately after the ceremony, the bride and groom jumped into the water. The guests ate “bagels and lox and cereal,” it was over by noon, and everyone lived happily ever after. Sounds like a dream.

Season 4 of Girls is in full production and filming throughout the streets of New York City. By the picture up top we see that Adam and Hannah are still going strong, despite her imminent trip to Iowa for her creative writing degree. All the while, the paparazzi have done their job of following the cast around their shoots, most recently capturing Dunham rockin’ her short shorts, and Queen Jemima being beautiful in her adorable outfit; worn lace boots, a floral dress and a cardigan…she’s just too cool.

To entertain season 4 rumors, it’s been speculated that Lena is in talks with her “bestie” Taylor Swift to not only play a character in the show, but also to write music. Maybe Taylor will play Marnie’s BFF. I could see that, could you? It’s also speculated that killer-eyebrows-girl/model Cara Delevingne will also cameo. Maybe a Bushwick model/junkie? Who knows. We shall see!

Be still our beating Jewish hearts! Girls star, artist, and Brooklyn mom Jemima Kirke does Shabbos dinner. (Yep, she plays Jessa, the one with the British accent.) Turns out Kirke is the granddaughter of Jewish-British-Iraqi real estate developer Jack Dellal, and her husband Michael Mosberg (who just got the go-ahead to build a fancy, for-profit rehab center in Red Hook, Brooklyn) is Jewish too.

In the March 10 issue of New York Magazine, Kirke explained:

We do Shabbat sometimes. Mike went to Yeshiva law school. He’s super-Jew and super-corporate. That’s why I was so attracted to him when I met him: the contradiction.

Other things we learned from the voyeuristic slideshow: Mosberg likes to grab her butt, she doesn’t have a mommy group (“God forbid”), and they are both ridiculously good looking and have a bunch of tattoos.

The girls are back in town! Last night the season three premiere kicked off in New York City for the Girls crew and friends, pumping us up for Sunday January 12th, when it all begins again.

Lena, Allison, Jemima, and Zosia all looked gorgeous and grown up. Lena wore a sparkly dress, and looked, dare I say, “polished” with her sharp new haircut. Jemima looked movie star glam as usual, also sporting a shorter new haircut (trendsetters). Zosia kept it NYC appropriate with a black mini dress, and Allison looked a bit like a princess from Disney on Ice (but of course, beautiful).

The party even had a suede subway set replicating the Brooklyn-Queens G (stands for GIRLS) train, which of course, guaranteed guests some adorable “life like” posed shots riding the train (circa Lena falling asleep on the unplanned, incoherent F ride to Coney Island).

“Everything that has been so terrible and painful in the last few months was leading me to this point,” says Hannah Horvath in the latest Girls trailer. Can’t wait to see the goodness (book deal, Adam, “her maturing”) that unfolds for her this season.

One highlight of the Girls Season 1 DVD gag reel is this clip of Shoshanna (Zosia Mamet) and Jessa (Jemima Kirke). Aside from her trademark pink Juicy Couture sweatsuit, Shoshanna is sporting her classic wince as she passive aggressively deals with Jemima climbing all over her stuffed animals—until, of course, they both crack up.

There was one casualty, though, and his name is Snuffles:

Played by David Mamet’s daughter Zosia, Shoshanna is everything the girls of Girls aren’t. She’s still in college. She has no financial concerns. And most importantly, she’s never had sex, a seeming character flaw that she admits to bashfully. With the third episode behind us, it’s time to ask the question that’s surely on everyone’s mind, or at least everyone here at Jewcy: Does Girls have a Shoshanna problem?

To be fair, Mamet does a great job playing a character that has no business being on the show. Her quips, while sometimes even more cringe-inducing than Lena Dunham’s character Hannah Horvath’s attempts to be sexy or professional (or both), are delivered flawlessly. But that only momentarily distracts from the fact that her character is so majorly absurd and even borderline offensive (As June Thomas put it, “she’s the Facebook chat of the group”).

The show’s website describes Shoshanna as “a virgin with Sex and the City dreams and Brooklyn nightmares.” Mamet herself said of the character, “She is literally the opposite of me … Jewish American Princess with an unexpected inner life.” She is introduced as the jappy girl with an apartment in Nolita who’s only part of the group because her cool British cousin moves in and begrudgingly includes her. She wears pink Juicy sweatsuits, listens to Kelly Clarkson, and abbreviates words incessantly. She also hails from the suburbs, making her character the obvious (obvi?) sheltered foil to her seemingly more experienced friends.

Emily Nussbaum points out that Dunham initially saw Shoshanna as being a minor character on the show and only later decided to make the role more prominent. But that doesn’t explain what she’s doing on the show to begin with. Still, if that’s the case, maybe Shoshanna will grow into a more developed, more relatable character, but so far the evidence does not seem to point in that direction. In the first few episodes, Shoshanna appears as the most caricatured of all the Girls.

In the second episode, when Jessa is scheduled to get an abortion, Shoshanna shows up at the Soho Women’s Clinic armed with bags of candy from Dylan’s Candy Bar. “Hi! So sorry I’m late,” she offers, octaves louder than appropriate for the pregnant women-filled waiting room, “I stopped at Dylan’s because I don’t know how long these things take, but when my sister had her baby it was, like, hours and I was starving.” Transcription doesn’t do justice to Mamet’s frenzied tone and hyperactive cadence, but what the scene reveals is an earnest—if completely off-base and inappropriate—attempt at being helpful in a serious, unfamiliar situation.

Sure, all the girls are lost and confused, but one gets the sense that we’re supposed to sort of understand the other girls—yes, Hannah is ridiculous for asking for $1,100 a month from her parents; yes, Jessa does not understand what constitutes appropriate clothing for work or what work really is; and yes, Marnie may have a misguided notion of what a boyfriend is. But it’s only Shoshanna who we laugh at, and never with.

While they’re all out experiencing life and making mistakes, she seems to be sitting around, waiting for them to show up and use her as a punch line. She’s the only character who doesn’t have a story of her own, or even a scene of her own. In last night’s episode we learned about Shoshanna’s baggage—she has Irritable Bowel Syndrome, she doesn’t love her grandmother, and, shocker, she’s a virgin (which we learned, and were meant to laugh at, in the second episode). They all have failings, and these failings are consistently made fun of in some way, but with Shoshanna it just feels more malicious.

Hannah brushes aside Shoshanna’s virginity as “baggage,” explaining that once she has sex her virginity won’t be an issue anymore. This flippant dismissal diminishes the enormity of Shoshanna’s very realistic anxiety, reaffirming her status as being somehow different from the other girls. It’s as if Shoshanna’s problems aren’t real enough for the group to address. In a show that honestly depicts young girls and sex, wouldn’t it make sense to have the virgin character not be simply a one-dimensional punch line?
