If you’re having a bad week so far, just be grateful that you don’t work for Conal International Trading, a shoe company in the news because it turns out that their work boots leave teeny tiny swastikas in their footprints.

Reddit has earned another day on the Internet by breaking the story; a user started a thread entitled “There was an angle I didn’t get to see when ordering my new work boots…” And behold, a photo of the sole of the “Polar Fox” boot bearing eight little squares with squiggles coming off of them (somewhat swastika-esque), and what snow looks like after meeting the bottom of said boot.

It’s not even like the conspiracy theory that Vans are anti-Semitic for having shapes that resemble Jewish stars on their soles (or that they’ve hidden swastikas inside the sneaker). And this isn’t just unfortunately evocative, like Zara’s embarrassing striped pajamas with yellow stars. These snow prints are really clearly the same shapes as swastikas.  It’s kind of impressive, actually.

The shoe company is based in Los Angeles, though the boots are made in China (the company has adamantly blamed China on this one, as an “obvious mistake” by manufacturers). The shoes are no longer available (any Polar Foxes you may find on Amazon have been cleared as swastika-free), but we’ll always have the Reddit puns to remember them by.

Granted, most of those are more offensive than funny, but shout out to “Depends on the snow, they honestly don’t perform well in Russia.”

A few Neo-Nazis think the footprint was intentional, because the world revolves around them, apparently. But it’s almost a shame the boot is no longer available, because if the Montana neo-Nazi march ever actually happens, they would be the perfect shoe for participants to wear while they get the crap beat out of them.

Well, someone’s gone to the effort of painting a giant swastika at the bottom of a swimming pool in Pomerode, Brazil. Swell.

The discovery was made by a police helicopter in the southern state of Santa Catarina during a kidnapping investigation, CNN reports. Apparently the swastika is just 13 years old, so it can’t even be attributed to the Nazi old-guard who weaseled their way out of Europe at the end of the war and fled to Brazil. Nope, this one’s relatively fresh and legally legit—charges won’t be pressed because the pool is on private land and the homeowner “is not promoting Nazism.” (Maybe s/he played the old, ‘Oh, I’m a Buddhist card’?)

Pomerode has a large German-speaking population: about 90 per cent of the municipality is of German descent, and an annual Oktoberfest—one of the biggest in the world—is held in the nearby town of Blumenau. Most Germans emigrated to Brazil in the 19th and early 20th centuries, but a good number arrived after WWII—including an estimated 2,000 Nazis. Among them was Josef Mengele, the infamous physician and torturer of Auschwitz.

So, there you have it. Southern Brazil: exporter of supermodels; haven for Nazi sympathizers.

Madonna has responded to the controversy—and lawsuit threat—that her use of a swastika during recent concerts has sparked, saying she uses the symbol (broadcast on the face of French Front National leader Marine Le Pen) to show “the intolerance that we human beings have for one another.”

According to the New York Times, which quoted a Brazilian television interview with the Material Girl:

The singer said the image was justified because the song concerns intolerance and explores the question of “how much we judge people before knowing them.”

“Music should be about ideas, right?” she said. “Ideas inspire music.”

It’s almost December, and Erik Bracamonte and Joseph Cianciulli have been nominated for “Dumbest Schmucks of the 2010” just under the wire.  The duo were arrested for allegedly taking 28 folding chairs, and arranging them into one giant swastika in a synagogue parking lot.

According to reports, the police didn’t have a hard time cracking the case:

“[O]fficers found one of the suspects, who admitted to being in the synagogue and arranging the chairs. From there…the investigation “blossomed into the arrest of another suspect.”

Part of me wants to almost say, “well at least they got creative; they didn’t spray paint a swastika into the wall,” but then I think to myself, “they placed 28 pieces of furniture in the shape of a swastika in a parking lot that probably has at least 2 cameras on at all times, and didn’t stop to think about that?”  That’s comic gold guys.  You should sell your story to Mel Gibson so he can make a buddy film.
