This week on Glee we got "Duets," an episode that was about relationships. We got Finn/Rachel, Finn/Sam, Sam/Quinn, Brittany/Santana, Brittany/Artie, Tina/Mike, Tina/Artie, Mercedes/Santana and Kurt/Rachel. It was nice to see the Glee kids take center stage, with little interference from Will, and none at all from the all-too-absent Sue Sylvester. Competing for unlimited bread sticks, the Glee cast unleashed some of the show’s finest musical performances yet. But like I said, the heart of this episode wasn’t the musical duos, it was the emotional pairings. It may take two to tango, but it takes a whole lot more than that to make a good episode of Glee:
Boyfriend: The show starts off on something of a sour note: Noah "Puck" Puckerman, the anti-nebish, is in juvy. Now the only male Jew we’ve got is Jacob ben-Israel.
Girlfriend: I’m just hoping Puck comes back with a barbed wire/Star of David/Menorah-themed prison tattoo. A girl can dream.
I sense a Sam/Finn bromance blossoming. What’s your favorite Glee bromance?
I disagree — I think Finn will ultimately lead Sam astray, but not necessarily on purpose. Finn’s not known for his judgment or direction, and considering my Finn theory (that he will grapple with feelings of being left behind while everyone else plans on college, Hollywood or Broadway) I can see him projecting a lot of frustration and self-hatred onto Sam, who, like Finn, is talented and handsome. As for a favorite Glee bromance: Sue and Mr. Schue, hands down.
Also, Finn’s a singer drummer, how do you feel about that?
Well, I’m way on board with singing and drumming. Finn’s no Phil Collins, but he can fake it well enough. I’m not convinced that Cory Monteith (the actor that plays Finn) actually plays the drums.
Finn and Rachel did not one, but two terrible songs. What could they have done better? I thought the vocals on "Don’t Go Breaking My Heart" were great, with Rachel toning it down enough for Finn to show that he is a strong singer. The choreography and general feel had me gagging, but the song itself was quite nice. The second song was a little too silly for me, I didn’t see it really as offensive, and the Glee club’s strong reaction didn’t make sense to me.
I get the sense Brittany has a wheelchair fetish.
Brittany is so complex. Her relationship with Artie is clearly not about Artie, but about her own belief that her worth lies in her underpants. I think she truly loves Santana, and Santana’s half-hearted rejection is enough to make her turn to the closest person: Artie. I don’t feel bad for Artie either. No one forced him to have sex with Brittany, and his reaction towards her near the end of the episode is only more proof that he is the misogynist that Tina accused him of being when they broke up. I could go on about this, but I won’t. I would much rather see Brittany and Santana than Artie and anyone.
Mercedes and Santana doing "River Deep, Mountain High" is my cover of the year so far. Tina Turner is proud. They did fantastically, though they generally trot Merecedes out to do the show-stopper in each episode. I was impressed at how Santana held her own performing with Mercedes, and I wish they’d show more super-Santana!

I don’t want to spoil the rest of the season for everyone, so my lady lips are sealed.
