Heeb the Magazine is Dead

That’s what this blog post by Publisher Joshua Neuman said

It’s been an interesting eight-year run for the quarterly magazine, one that began with an initial blessing (and financial backing) from big wigs like Steven Spielberg and Charles Bronfman.  Their boundary pushing articles sometimes bordered on brilliant, and at other times, bad taste. But that’s all in the past now, because today the magazine has announced that it plans to suspend the print edition indefinitely.

So what does this mean for the future of Jewish media?  Sure, the loss of Heeb does signal the end of the print era for irreverent Jewish publications — one that was marked by the use of terms like "Hipster Jews" and "Cool Jews" to describe the crowds at open-bar shindigs.  But it also signals to a brave new cohort of Jewish websites (like this one, Jewlicious, Tablet, etc.) that we can hopefully continue pushing Jewish culture in new directions, and to steal a quote from Neuman’s requiem, "have a little fun."

Update: In the comments below, Daniel Sieradski mentioned my time spent as a Heeb contributing editor.  While my actual affiliation with the magazine itself was somewhat limited, it should be noted that I was on the masthead of the magazine for several issues, as well as a contributor to the blog.
