Woody Allen Talks to Newspaper, Kvetches, and Makes Self-Hating Jew Comment

If Woody Allen stopped complaining, playing the King Self-Hating Jew role, and making movies, he’d be dead.  So it’s a good thing there’s an interview with him in the New York Times today where he fulfills two of those things, and talks about his newest movie, You Will Meet a Tall Dark Stranger.

In case you have better things to do, here is a very quick breakdown:

  • Writer of article lets us know that like 90% of all people working at just about every media outlet in New York, that he too is a fan of Wody Allen.  Also like 90% of all guys that didn’t lose their virginity till they were old enough to vote, because they were "too busy with high school," he wanted the Star Wars Bar Mitvah in Deconstructing Harry
  • Writer starts off interview by asking Allen if he should wish him a happy new year.  Allen tells him no, because that’s "for your people".  I’m left pining for a funnier joke, but the guy has managed to stretch the same sort of  answer out for several decades, so I let him off the hook.
  • Writer asks Allen a heavy philosophical question about God (let’s call this, "catering to the act").  Allen again responds with basically the same response he’s been using for years (existential comedy).
  • Allen talks about new movie.  Makes no reference to Ingmar Bergman or Groucho Marx.
  • Allen calls himself "lowbrow," and I think to myself, "oh Woody, you always know how to wrap up an interview."
  • I realize to self that I’ve read dozens of Woody Allen  interviews, and I’ll probably read a dozen more.
