Ask a Goy: The Yuri Foreman Fight

My father took me to see Rocky IV when I was barely five-years-old.  Around the same time, I was given "Mike Tyson’s Punch-Out!!!" for Nintendo as birthday gift:  it’s safe to say that 1985-86 was the high point of my boxing fascination.  This doesn’t mean that I don’t appreciate the sweet science, I just don’t really understand it past the equation of: guy 1 hits guy 2.  1 guy is supposed to go down for X amount of seconds or X amount of times.  I’d like to fix that, and I figure with the upcoming fight between MOT Yuri Foreman and Miguel Cotto for the World Boxing Association super welterweight champion at Yankee Stadium on June 5th, would be the perfect opportunity to do so. Enter Justin Massa:  Big Easy native living in Chicago, Murder City Devils fan, champion of civil and human rights, co-founder of MoveSmart.org, Project Director for Data Services at the Metro Chicago Information Center and huge boxing fan.  Justin is this weeks goy oracle who will help this Jew better understand the upcoming fight that everyone is talking about. So it’s the middle of summer and these two guys are going to fight at Yankee Stadium.  What’s the big deal? This is the first fight in Yankee Stadium in more than 30 years and could have the largest attendance of any boxing match in decades. It’s also an outdoor fight above the Mason Dixon line, a relatively rare occurrence. But more than anything, these are two legit boxers, one on the ascendancy and another trying to right what many see as a slow decline, in what should be a great fight. And it’s a Puerto Rican vs. a Jew in NYC. What else could you want in a fight?

What happened to all the good Jewish boxers? It seems like 1933 was just yesterday when Barney Ross was beating people to a pulp. Bogus question – Zab Judah is still an active fighter. I’ve always been a Judah fan and he’s got a fight on ESPN’s Friday Night Fights coming up – his career has hit a bit of a rough patch but he’s still young and incredibly talented and should make a comeback. And I’ll let you tell Zab that he’s not a real Jew.  [Judah is a Black Hebrew Israelite]

I guess I’d rather let him figure that out on his own.  Am I cheering for Foreman just because he’s a Jew? Probably, but you can be confident in also cheering for Foreman because he is good and has a very real shot at winning. Most odds makers have Cotto as a heavy favorite (8/1 last I checked), but I think that also reflects a much higher level of betting on Cotto when compared to Foreman. Ever since he endured a brutal beating at the hands of Antonio Margarito (who probably had loaded gloves) Cotto hasn’t been quite the same.  Give it to me straight:  is my boy going to make his people proud? Yes. If he wins, Foreman will hold a victory over a long-time top ten pound for pound boxer who, until very recently, was ducked by some of the biggest names in the sport (including Floyd Mayweather). If he loses, it will be to one of the best in the division who, after a few missteps, is re-establishing his career over a very game opponent. Either way, Foreman should make you proud.
