The Big Jewcy: Maris Kreizman, Slaughterhouse 90210

Chances are, if I see a new Tumblr, I’m either going to think it’s brilliant or it’s hot garbage.

Slaughterhouse 90210, a Tumblr created and maintained by Maris Kreizman, is in a league of it’s own.  Kreizman’s love of both literature and 90’s pop culture is apparent, and in using the very minimalist design supplied by her blogging platform of choice, each post looks like a little work of art.

For our readers who might not know, what exactly is Slaughterhouse 90210?  It’s a tumblr blog with the tagline "Kurt Vonnegut, meet Brenda Walsh." Basically, I take a screengrab from a TV show and pair it with a literary quotation. My hope is that by juxtaposing Jane Austen with, say, Rock of Love, you’ll see both the work of literature and the TV show in a whole new light–cultural commentary in its simplest, most digestible form. How did you come up with the idea for the site?

My original idea was simply to do a blog of quotes from my favorite books, one that would feature uber-famous authors alongside lesser known writers who deserve a wider audience. But quotes alone just weren’t interesting enough. And I have always been as much of a TV junkie as I am a reader–I take great joy in both high and low culture, and I wanted to be able to celebrate both and blend them together. Plus, I realized that the way to make a great quote more palatable to tumblr users is to attach it to a Christina Hendricks photo! Who’s more of a heartthrob:  Luke Perry circa now or Kurt Vonnegut?

Kurt Vonnegut, for sure (Not circa now, right? Because that would be creepy). But I like to think that both Vonnegut and Dylan McKay share many of the same traits that make a man sexy–they’re rebels, opinionated men who aren’t afraid to say exactly what they think. And if Vonnegut managed to comment on society in a more eloquent and eye-opening way, well, at least Dylan had that awesome eyebrow scar as a consolation prize.
