The Big Jewcy: Rebecca Dana, Reporter/Author – The Daily Beast

The first time I ever read an issue of The New Yorker was during the Tina Brown era of the mid-90’s.  While some old schoolers weren’t fans during Ms. Brown’s tenure as editor of the storied magazine, I look back on those days as the time I learned to love the publication.  That’s why it’s probably no surprise that The Daily Beast, Brown’s online project, is one of my first reads of the day, and Rebecca Dana is one of my favorite writers on the site. A senior correspondent for the popular domain, Dana can cover just about anything: she can discuss fashion without losing my interest, she can comment on the state of the media, or interview Molly Ringwald.  Rebecca Dana can do it all.

Your forthcoming book is called “Jujitsu Rabbi and the Godless Blonde”, that sounds like the best title ever; what the hell is it about?

Hey, thanks! The book is still being lived/written, so I won’t say too much. But the title is pretty comprehensive: It’s about a girl (me), who was raised Jewish but isn’t such a big believer, and who has, among other things, an unnatural enthusiasm for dyeing her hair. There is also a Hasidic rabbi. He practices jujitsu and plays a mean electric bass.

You went from reporting at the Wall Street Journal to being a senior correspondent at The Daily Beast.  Was the move from print to blog difficult?

No. It was the easiest job-switch I’ve ever made. I love the Internet!

On The Daily Beast you’ve written about everything from Molly Ringwald to the death of Newsweek; you’re pretty versatile.  If you had to pick a favorite topic that you’ve reported on, what would it be?

Definitely Newsweek. Just kidding! I like anything that has a good conflict and at least one crazy/brilliant/wonderful/terrible person involved. And Rue McClanahan. I love writing about Rue.

Was she your favorite Golden Girl?

Far and away.
