Fashion Week Bends Over Backwards for the Jews

I assume we all know about New York Fashion Week, that one week every six months where designers showcase their collections for the season to come. We’ve talked about this week before, and had you not heard about it before I mentioned it, I would simply like you to point me to the rock you’ve been living under for decades. Once I have pinpointed said rock I will call my dear friend Anna Wintour and the two of us will set fire to your cultural hideaway.

Now that that’s settled –  this year fashion week’s gone Yid and is catering to the Jews like never before. With the high holidays falling incredibly early this year and threatening to derail fashion week plans and decrease attendence, producers got wise. Names like Calvin Klein, Donna Karan and Yigal Azrouel don’t dare to show collections on Yom Kippur in fear of pissing off their bubbies and with the event being moved to the Jewified neighborhood that is the Upper West Side, producers have thoughtfully scheduled the event in between the high holiday celebrations of Rosh Hashana and Yom Kippur to keep from upsetting the locals. What began on September 11th last year will now commence on the 9th and Fashion’s Night Out (where stores stay open and hold late night shop and boozefests) will take place on the 10th, as it did last year, this time marking the middle rather than the beginning of Fashion Week.  With the many changes going on you’d think the beloved Anna would have something to say about it. It seems she’s too busy protesting the opening of a Serge Becker restaurant in her West Village neighborhood to notice. Although our zaftig nature and frugality may sometimes make us feel isolated by the fashion world, it’s clear that when it comes to the big stuff, fashion has our backs. It’s just too bad this week could not take place post Yom Kippur – there’s nothing like a fast day to make me feel slim and ready to take on the packs of gazelles that roam the Fashion Week tents.

New York Fashion Week is taking place at Lincoln Center from September 9th – 16th.

Fashion’s Night Out will take place Friday, September 10th.
