Jewcy Zeitgeist: 75-Year-Old Grandmother Kidnapped and Tortured, Blagojevich Impeachment Panel and Obama Loves Science

Here are the day’s top stories in no particular order:

  • President-elect Barack Obama’s choice for energy secretary, scientist and Nobel laureate Steven Chu, illustrates his devotion to science as well as to diversity. Here’s a big thumbs up for the environment!
  • A review panel commences today to determine whether Rod Blagojevich, the Illinois Governor arrested last week for putting president-elect Barack Obama’s Senate seat up for sale, should be impeached.
  • 26 people confirmed dead in a bus accident in Israel. The bus, which rolled down a slope near Eilat, was carrying a group of Russian travel agents on a trip to survey the Red Sea resort.
  • One tough cookie: Sandy Vinge, a bad-ass 75-year-old grandmother, survived a severe beating by three teen perpetrators, who kept her bound in the trunk of a car for over a day. A very bruised but thankful Vinge recounted the gruesome tale this morning on the Today Show.
  • The White House is exploring options for an auto bailout plan for Detroit’s failing car companies after the proposed bailout bill was rejected by the Senate last week.
  • Talk about giving great face: Today doctors in Cleveland performed the first face transplant, replacing 80 percent of the patient’s face with the skin of a dead female donor.
  • In Texas, a child’s letter sent to Santa Claus, in which she pleaded to St. Nick to stop a relative from inappropriately touching her and her sister, has led to sexual abuse charges.
