Here are today’s top stories in no particular order:

- As swine flu hysteria takes hold, schools and other public places are taking measures to prevent the pandemic, while scientists say a vaccine could take months to produce. - Three more U.S. troops – two Marines and a sailor – have been killed in Iraq. The total number of American deaths in Iraq for the month of April was 18.
- The legislature in Maine has voted to approve a bill legalizing same-sex marriage, which could make it the fifth state to accept gay marriage. The bill still needs to be approved by the lower chamber and the governor.
- A genetic map of Africa has been released, detailing the genetic diversity among the continent where all human beings originated.
- New York City’s Cinco de Mayo festivities have been cancelled as a result of swine flu-related hysteria.
