Here are today’s top stories in no particular order:
- Somali pirates have taken over another ship, a Dutch cargo vessel, in the Gulf of Aden. The string of hijackings has numbered 109 since the beginning of 2009.
- As wildfires continue to rage in California, the homes of more than 26,000 are being threatened in the Santa Barbara area.
- New Jersey’s Supreme Court has ruled that towns are not allowed to ban convicted sex offenders from living near schools, parks, and other places where children play.
- The last surviving suspect from the Mumbai terror strikes has inadvertently admitted that he’s an adult and has plead guilty to charges.
- Maryland has become the first state in the U.S. to make crimes against the homeless a hate crime. The law will take effect October 1.
- Elizabeth Edwards appeared on The Oprah Winfrey Show today and scorned her husband’s former mistress, Rielle Hunter, raising new questions about the paternity of Hunter’s child. [Editor’s Note: The National Enquirer is reporting that Hunter has asked Edwards to submit to a paternity test. Yeah, I know people bash the Enquirer, but they are the people who broke the Edwards/Hunter story in the first place when the mainstream media wouldn’t touch it.]
