- The U.S. Army is cutting back its "stop-loss" program, which forces some soldiers on extended tours of duty, after record numbers of soldiers have been required to stay on in the military past their discharge dates over the last five years. The program is expected to be phased out completely by 2011.
- At least one American journalist has been detained by the North Korean guard after reportedly ignoring warnings to stop filming.
- The French are unhappy with their president, Nicolas Sarkozy, so they’re… reading his least-favorite book. Go France, you tell him!
- Speaking of books, Former President Bush is releasing a book about all the important decisions he made as president, tentatively titled Decision Points. In an interview talking about the book, Former Vice President Dick Cheney noted the economic crisis and said blame couldn’t be cast upon the Bush administration, because "stuff happens." The "stuff" he referenced? September 11, the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, and Hurricane Katrina.
- It must be a big day for books and presidents, as news surfaces that President Obama, too, has secured a $500,000 advance for a children’s book, according to recently released financial records from just before Obama took office. He plans on releasing it after his presidency. Maybe he’ll talk more about it tonight during his appearance on Leno…
- Josef Fritzl, the Austrian man who repeatedly raped his imprisoned daughter over 24 years and then left her to die, has been sentenced to life in prison.
- Actress Natasha Richardson has died as a result of complications from a Monday ski accident. She was 45.
