Jewcy Zeitgeist: Unemployment Breaks Records, Madonna Adoption Rejected, and Iowa Approves Gay Marriage

Here are today’s top stories in no particular order:

  • U.S. unemployment has hit a 25-year high, reaching 8.5 percent for the month of March. This is an increase of .4 percent since February.
  • The new Malaysian Prime Minister, Najib Razak, took office today and immediately released 13 detainees and reversed a ban on two opposition newspapers.
  • A Massachusetts mother has been charged with the stabbing of her two-year-old. The woman, who thought she was being stalked by a cult, used scissors to stab the toddler over 100 times.
  • In other poor parenting move, a California man held up a convenience store, demanding money from the safe. With his nine-year-old daughter in his arms. The girl has safely been returned to family members, but her father remains at large.
  • A Malawi court has rejected Madonna’s bid to adopt a four-year-old girl, Mercy James, on the basis of the adoptive parent needing to be a resident of a southern African nation for at least 18 months.
  • Iowa has become the third state to constitutionalize gay marriage. The Supreme Court ruling to overturn the ban on same-sex marriage was unanimous and will take effect in three weeks.
