Nazi Art Reprise

The saga of Nazi art restitution continues across Europe, with a notable settlement at Vienna’s Leopold Museum. Austria’s expressionist darling Egon Schiele will remain at the museum in the form of Houses by the Sea, one of many pieces by the artist in the collection, after its Nazi-looted roots were confirmed and settled over in court. Like Klimt’s infamous Portrait of Adele-Bloch-Bauer, Houses will continue to enjoy a future in a prominent museum. And this is all thanks to the menschy son of the museum’s founder who, according to Bloomberg, is settling all outstanding claims of Nazi-looted art despite his late father’s claim that it was not subject to Austria’s restitution law as a private foundation. Seems like a good week for fathers and sons to burn bridges over Nazism.
