Artists have traditionally been the stimulus package to cultural booms: from Paris to Prague, and now Little Odessa. ArtOnBrighton is a brilliant initiative looking for proposals for art pieces, installations, video, and other multidisciplinary work that will be displayed at a neighborhood-wide festival September 17-18.
With the largest immigrant concentration in the city, this beautification project is in the same spirit as the 1970s I ♥ NY movement, promising to cultivate awareness inside the neighborhood and out of this group’s massive yet largely untapped history in the public sphere.
Brighton Beach storefronts, community organizations, synagogues, and public spaces are one hell of a canvas, comrades. Despite a collective history in suffering, the tribe’s artists can revive what Chagall referred to as the sense of wonder in the world and do this Brooklyn nook some justice.
ArtOnBrighton is an initiative of the BluePrint Fellowship project of COJECO and funded by the UJA-Federation of NY.
Proposals
Selection into the festival is contingent on the submission of:
- An application
- 3 samples of your previous work
- Preliminary sketch, photograph, or video of work that will be displayed
Selection Criteria
Work submitted for selection must engage with the neighborhood and identity
of Brighton Beach on a meaningful and significant level; examples could
range from the lens of immigration, politics, language, to environmentalism,
culture, gender, or religion. Artistic merit as relevant to images of past
works provided and the renderings of the proposed work will be judged by
ArtOnBrighton committee.
