RIP “Fiddler on the Roof” Author Joseph Stein

Sad news that Joseph Stein, the author who wrote Fiddler on the Roof, has died after fracturing his skull in a fall. He was 98.

The book based on stories by Sholem Aleichem, went on to be the most endearing play ever written about Jews and shtetl life.  Featuring music by Jerry Bock and lyrics by Sheldon Harnick, Fiddler won nine Tony Awards in 1965, including Stein’s Best Author of a Musical.
