Tuesday Playlist: New A-Trak, Yo La Tengo, and Lost Soul

After listening to "Dirty South Dance 2", the newest mixtape by Montreal DJ and turntablist, A-Trak, I’m convinced that all aspiring DJ’s should pay attention to the way this guy builds a mix.  The first four minutes are good feeling, almost dancehall sounding bumpers that provide a perfect bridge for A-Trak to turn the Ludacris anthem, "How Low", into something that sounds like Miami Booty Bass being bumped at a Paris fashion show.  The more I listen to this mix, the more I keep shaking my head and saying "this is filthiest mix I’ve heard in months." Next up, Yo La Tengo meets Pete Rock.  Rock’s status is undeniable.  It would be fair to start calling him "The Great" Pete Rock, because he’s one of the without a doubt one of the greatest hip hop producers ever.  In terms of American indie rock, the same could be said for Yo La Tengo.  They are one of the best and most important American bands of the last 30 years, and continue to put out great stuff.  Coming out next month, Yo La Tengo presents an EP of remixes of the song "Here To Fall", the lead track from last year’s "Popular Songs", by De La Soul, RJD2 and this one, by Pete Rock. I’m obsessed with nearly everything on Chicago’s Numero Group. This song off the The Outskirts of Deep City compilation, The Rising Sun – "Do What You’re Doin", is my favorite song right now.
