One Less Classic Jewish Songwriter In The World

The Great American Songbook is littered with names of Jews who wrote some of the most unforgettable tunes in the history of the 20th century, but Jerry Leiber and his partner Mike Stoller might have been two of the most instrumental (no pun intended) in creating lyrics that would resonate with millions, and give some  of the biggest hits to some of rock’s greatest legends.  Mr. Leiber passed away yesterday at the age of 78.

Leiber and Stoller were responsible for songs such as the Elvis Presley rendition of “Hound Dog,” “Poison Ivy” and “Yakety Yak” by The Coasters, and many other hits from the early days of rock and roll. (Including the one we’ve provided below.)
