AnnouncingArtOnBrighton – a two-day art festival that will take place on the Brighton Beach strip of Brooklyn, otherwise known as “Little Russia by the Sea.”
ArtOnBrighton is curated by a group of Russian-speaking artists, performers, writers, and non-profit professionals,to explore the multi-dimensionality of Brighton Beach. Brighton Beach holds more than the old stereotypes of Soviet-style babushkas, vodka-swilling mobsters, and overly tanned techno club-goers. Brighton Beach houses Muslim Uighurs from China, Jews from the Republic of Georgia, and has the largest population of immigrants from the Former Soviet Union in the entire United States – all contained within a four-block radius. It has inspired artists from Isaac Bashevis Singer to Woody Allen, and remains a common ground for new and old generations of immigrants sharing a collective history and a schmaltzy longing for authentic pierogies. Yet Brighton Beach is more than just a place to wax nostalgic for the past, it is also home to a growing population of artists, filmmakers, poets, and musicians who are part of a cultural syncretism of Yiddishkeit, Klezmer, Cabaret, and multi-country migrations.
The ArtOnBrighton festival will feature video, installation art, and music performances along the Brighton Beach Boardwalk, a multimedia exhibition, poetry readings, and concert at the New York Aquarium, and Nosh Walks – a walking food tour.
HadassaGoldvicht, Ira Eduardovna, Margarita Korol, Barbur, VYDAVY Sindikat, and Rinat Edelstein are just some of the artists who will be featured in the main exhibition of ArtOnBrighton. Participating artists are responding to the Brighton Beach neighborhood, stimulating public dialogue about local issues that engage with the neighborhood and identity of Brighton Beach on a meaningful and significant level; with topics ranging from immigration, politics, and language, to environmentalism, culture, gender, and religion.
The night will end with a giant party at the New York Aquarium with musical performances by the talented cabaret singer and accordion virtuoso Mira Stroika, Svetlana Shmulyian, the Beachniks, and The Sway Machinery featuring guitarist Jeremiah Lockwood of Balkan Beat Box, all followed by a dance party spun by DJ Spinach.
The festival runs from 5-11pm on Saturday and 2-4pm on Sunday. Happy Hour will be from 6-7pm on Saturday with free wine and music. To reach the Boardwalk, take the Q train to the Ocean Parkway stop in Brooklyn. The NY Aquarium is located on Surf Avenue & West 8th Street in Brooklyn.
