Israel Bans ‘Revenge Porn’

Israel, you trendsetter, you. Kim Kardashian and Paris Hilton would be very sad to hear that Israel is the first country to prohibit “revenge porn.”

Revenge porn means nude photos and sexually explicit films posted online without the subject’s consent. Time reports that a new amendment to Israel’s Sexual Harassment Bill passed unanimously in the Knesset, specifying that Israeli offenders could face up to five years in jail.

The bill was introduced by Knesset member MK Yifat Kariv, after she heard about a video being posted to WhatsApp (didn’t know they had videos now?) of a man having sex with his ex-girlfriend. Kariv refers to the practice as “virtual rape.

Well, glad to know Israel is doing their part to squash public embarrassment and shame, known to some (*cough*) as fame!

CORRECTION: A previous version of this post suggested that MK Kariv had a personal connection to a victim of revenge porn.
