Didn’t think that selfies could get any more egregious? Apparently, young tourists visiting concentration camps in Poland are taking “cute” photos of themselves and plastering them about Instagram. A writer for the German version of Vice documented the seriously insensitive, distasteful pictures, JTA reports.
Brehl collected an array of examples. His 25 top offenders include a girl in mittens giving a thumbs-up sign (hashtags: #auschwitz #birkenau… #chilly #willy”), a grinning girl posed so a Jewish star appears to grow out of her head (#juden #arbeitmachtfrei #treblinka #zyklonB #feelgood), a smiling girl posing at the Treblinka memorial in Poland (#Look #cool #hot #treblinka #Poland) and a photo of the Berlin Holocaust memorial with the hashtag #instacaust.
One of the photos is actually captioned, “Being sad at the Holocaust memorial #interrailing #berlin #holocaustmemorial @racrow,” with two young women making frowny, pouty faces.
Instagram is the worst. Hashtag, hashtag, hashtag.
