Don't know how I missed this one, but thanks to a reliable source, I discovered that the Israeli paper Ha'aretz had disclosed two weeks ago NY Times publisher Arthur Sulzberger Jr.'s flip comment about the sustainability of his franchise, which has caused the publisher to clarify his statement.
Given the constant erosion of the printed press, do you see the New York Times still being printed in five years?
"I really don't know whether we'll be printing the Times in five years, and you know what? I don't care either," he says.
Sulzberger is focusing on how to best manage the transition from print to Internet.
"The Internet is a wonderful place to be, and we're leading there," he points out.
Sulzberger went on to speak with his employees, vaguely saying, "So let me clear the air on this issue. It is my heartfelt view that newspapers will be around–in print–for a long time. But I also believe that we must be prepared for that judgment to be wrong."
Does this mean I should cancel my subscription to The Sunday Times yet?
