We’d be willing to wager that of all the Jewish traditions that confuse and repulse people the most, it’s Kaparot. The idea of grabbing a chicken by the neck, waving around ones head, then slitting it’s throat doesn’t really sit too easy with some people.
We’d also be willing to bet that the people at the Orthodox Union threw around the idea that "hey, all these Jews killing their own chickens may marginalize our profits! We need to do something."
So the marketing gurus at the OU got together and came up with an idea: the Virtual Kaparah Chicken. The only thing that was harmed was the tree that had to die the paper the chicken is printed on, and little Menachem doesn’t have to grow up performing a ritual some might consider barbaric.
