JTA Fails To Not Make Race An Issue Over African-American Rabbi Firing

Does the JTA really need to report on a rabbi’s contract not being renewed? If she’s the first African-American female rabbi they do.

Rabbi Alysa Stanton’s contract with Congregation Bayt Shalom in Greenville, S.C. was not renewed.  [As originaly reported by the Sisterhood blog at Forward reported yesterday.]

According to her soon-to-be former boss:

“We felt Rabbi Stanton has brought a lot of gifts to the congregation, but we felt she wasn’t a good fit for the direction we’re going,” board president Samantha Pilot told the Forward. “I can tell you with certainty that race — I never heard that come up once during her tenure or now. It’s a non-issue.”

Okay, so it’s not an issue of race.  Then why does the global news source of the Jewish people feel the need to report on it?  If the JTA felt the need to report on a rabbi who “wasn’t a good fit” for a specific congregation, they should probably start a new column called “Rabbis Who got Fired this Week.”
