A standard holiday weekend is typically packed with simchas, but my interest in this Memorial Day Weekends’ nuptials was all about meeting the parents. While I was originally frustrated that this week’s collection of wedding announcements failed to include a Civil War Reenactment themed ceremony, I did come across the more Jewcy pairing of Jodie Gordon and Josh Bloom. Their classically Conservative (sect, not political affiliation) occupations drew me in – the bride is currently a rabbinical student at Union College and a Brandeis graduate (typical) while the bridegroom works as the online communications director for Rabbis for Human Rights, North America. Sounds familiar, I instantly know this couple all too well. Odds are, one or both of them went to Camp Ramah or participated in USY after-school activities, they both love to play Jewish geography and think Ultimate Frisbee is a real sport. I assumed I knew everything there was to know about this couple until the icing on the cake was deliciously presented to me – the mother of the bride, who resides in Thousand Oaks, California, “designs and makes glassware, much of it with Judaic themes, that she sells at stores, craft fairs and festivals.” Amazing.
Next, I met Jamie Schiff and Jason Sperling and challenged their parents to get any Jewy-er than Jodie Gordon’s Jewish glassblowing mother, who I had already fallen in love with due to her downright Jewy McJewness. And then God delivered yet another perfectly wrapped Jewish present to appease my twisted sense of humor…
“The bride’s father is a composer, whose works include orchestral pieces and the opera “Gimpel the Fool,” based on a short story by Isaac Bashevis Singer. He is a music professor at Reed College, and is the author of “Gershwin: Rhapsody in Blue” and “The Music of Elliott Carter.” Her mother is the cantor at Congregation Beth Israel.” Even better.
But just when I thought things could not get any more fantastic, I found the ultimate Jewish gem, a Jewm if you will. The wedding of Steven Fuchs and Brian Lancaster was by far the sweetest and longest lasting love story featured in this weekend’s mazals. The couple, who already have a son and a daughter together plan to include both their children as well as their surrogate mothers in their celebration. As a nod to Mr. Fuch’s mother’s disapproval of the couple’s relationship, Mr. Lancaster chose the cabaret “Don’t Tell Mama” for their first date. After years together, Brian and Steven will seal the deal over the holiday weekend. At this point you may be wondering what attracted me, a cynical, Jewy Jew loving urban singleton to this typically adorable couple. Wait for it… wait for it…
“Mr. Lancaster and Mr. Fuchs met 26 years ago in New Jersey in a gay hiking group.” Enough said.
