Sukkot is probably my favorite Jewish holiday because we get to build a temporary structure, a sukkah, to live in—and decorate!—for a week. (More about why we do that here.) Traditionally, Jews adorn their Sukkot with posters of the ushpizin, the seven biblical “guests” who we invite to join us on each night of the festival. Not surprisingly, the ushpizin are all men: Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, Moses, Aaron, Joseph and David; the most revered dudes in the Torah. No ladies—until now.

Rather than invite seven biblical men to my sukkah, I decided I’d invite the Jewish female comedians and characters I’ve been most into this year, and throw together some posters to honor them.

I think the temporary/pop-up nature of Sukkot lends itself to a pop-culture influence, where the guests you welcome one year might not be the same ones you welcome the next. Last year I honored the cast of Girls. This year I’ve been pretty obsessed with Broad City, and continued to cultivate my enduring love for Lena Dunham, Sarah Silverman and others.

So without further ado, here are my ‘Ushpizienne: Class of 5775’: Lena Dunham, Amy Schumer, Abbi Jacobson, Jenny Slate, Ilana Glazer, Sarah Silverman, and Yael Stone.

Don’t forget to ‘hack into booth city’:

And—why not—the cast of Girls, from last Sukkot:

I met Alex Karpovsky outside of a cafe in Williamsburg, exactly where you would picture his character Ray Ploshansky from the hit show Girls hanging out. Clad in a bright green Lacoste tee and Nike sneakers, Karpovsky explained that while he somewhat identifies with Ray, he definitely wears more hats— in real life he’s an actor, writer, producer, and director.

Inside, he ordered a papaya salad, and when asked by a waitress if he’d like an alcoholic beverage, declined. He drinks, but not during the day—he has to set some limits for himself, he explained.

Unlike his character, Karpovsky doesn’t waste time. Over the past year he’s filmed six feature films, in between shooting the hit HBO show, Girls. Two of the films he wrote, directed, and starred in were released in March—the first, Rubberneck, chronicles the life of socially awkward scientist who becomes fanatically obsessed with a coworker after a random weekend tryst, while the second, Red Flag, is more of a caricature of the real Karpovsky, following a self-involved filmmaker on a journey to promote his independent film.

I read in an article that you like to go back to your parents’ house in Newton, MA every now and then for a good cry and to write. True?

Used to. I’m very happy now. But I used to cry a lot in my parents place, it’s true.

Is it true your mother doesn’t speak English?

She speaks a few words, but she doesn’t speak well. I end up speaking to her more in Russian than in English, but my Russian isn’t very good. It’s probably first or second-grade level Russian, so we can’t communicate very well, which is unfortunate because she’s a sweet lady. Otherwise we’re very close.

Did you go to Hebrew School?

I went for a year or two when I was really young, I think first grade. I love how people always just assume I’m Jewish, they don’t even ask anymore. Especially on the show it’s clearly stated that I’m Greek. People are like ‘So when did you go to Hebrew school?’ I’m like ‘Yeah I am Jewish, and I did go to Hebrew school for about a year or two.’

Has Judaism or religion affected your attitude towards your life and art at all?

I act in a lot of my own movies and generally I play a character who is neurotic, guilt-ridden, and full of anxiety. You can definitely make an argument that those are characteristics woven into our understanding of American Judaism, but that’s probably the extent of it. Otherwise I don’t feel like Judaism has defined the way that I view myself or carry myself.

What’s your favorite part about playing Ray on Girls and what is the part you dislike about it the most?

That’s an interesting question. There are a lot of things I like about playing Ray. I like the fact that he and I have some characteristics in common and I’m really glad that I’m not like him in real life. I take certain aspects of myself and amplify them to communicate the dramatic effect. I don’t feel like I’m inventing a lot, I feel like I’m just sort of exaggerating things that are already in place, to some extent. And that’s fun for me to do. I think he’s sort of cynical and judgmental and angry and all of the things that drive those characteristics are things that I relate to a lot. Being able to play around in those waters with other great actors is fulfilling to me.

What’s it like working with Lena Dunham?

It’s great. She knows exactly what she wants and she knows how to communicate it to the other actors and crew members in a way that’s efficient, coherent, and engaging. Also she does it in a way that leaves a little bit of room for us to kind of play around with our roles. The writing is so good that I don’t feel that drawn to improv too much on set, but there’s a bit of room, and that keeps me invested and interactive with the creative process.

Even just as a person she’s so effervescent, accessible, friendly, smart, and present. More recently in addition to all of her success she’s very helpful and has remained very down to earth. I love working with her for all of those reasons, and I have tremendous pride for Girls, I really love working on it. I have so much faith in the show and she’s the leader.

You directed and wrote Red Flag and Rubberneck. Did you find it difficult to direct yourself?

I don’t think it’s that hard for me to direct myself. When somebody directs me I feel like my main responsibility is to understand what he or she wants to convey in the most comprehensive way possible. It’s important to understand the exact motivations and objectives in play and how the scene relates to the big picture of the whole movie. If I’m present in that comprehensive sense then I will do the best job I can do, I can’t do better.

But when directing myself I’m trying to do all of that in addition to making sure everyone else is acting in my movie, correctly. Specifically my main responsibility when I’m acting and directing is making sure everyone is in the right tone. With comedy especially, things change, and people can improv a lot and go a little hammy. So the main difference is that you have more responsibility.

One of the incredible characteristics of Lena, although I’ve already mentioned 46, the 47th one would be that she’s really good at being an actor and director. She’s totally engaged in the scene and simultaneously able to improvise and be loose while taking notes on everything else that’s going on around her technically and performance wise. She’s completely engaged in a scene and then as soon as it cuts she immediately delivers very concise and relative notes to the actors and members of the crew. That takes a real multitasking mind that I don’t have. I have to watch playback and talk to people. That’s why we are able to shoot a Girls season very quickly. We just started shooting last week.

In Red Flag there’s a line that says, “I’m ready to die which means I’m ready to live.” Does that quote resonate with you at all?

That quote definitely resonates with me but I don’t feel I’ve overcome anything necessarily, it’s still an expression that I’m negotiating with. A lot of Red Flag is autobiographical and a caricature of who I really am. I definitely think about death a lot and I feel like one of the ways I can try to ease the anxiety is by making fun of myself.

So when the character says, ‘I’m ready to die, I’m ready to live,’ he’s having all of these issues and problems in life and he has this epiphany moment where he thinks they’re all rooted in his fear of death. Once he realized that he thinks it will trigger a catharsis and a lot of his problems will go away. He’s basically accepting the fact that he’s got a death anxiety and it reverberates to all of these other issues.

What are the common threads in your film choices?

I think I’m interested in stories that are character driven rather than plot driven. I’m interested in characters that are highly flawed, and protagonists that aren’t necessarily likeable, also that are insecure and neurotic. I play exaggerated versions of myself, and I feel to an extent these characters are a reflection of who I used to be. I mean you need to have a little bit of confidence to make these movies.

Of course you do. It’s a love hate relationship in a way. But as you grow older it turns more into love, or so they say…

Or so they say! Lets hope they’re right.

How did you get into acting?

When I was in graduate school at Oxford I did a lot of student theater. Most of it was sketch comedy and stand up theater. That was the first time I ever really acted in anything, and I was 21. I did a little bit of acting after I dropped out of grad school and moved to New York, but really bullshit theater, off, off, Broadway experimental stuff.

I never grew up wanting to be an actor. I wanted to be a scientist; my dad’s a scientist. I started undergrad and wanted to be a psychologist or study neuroscience and I did that for a bit. Then I got interested in doing student plays, and moved to New York City and got into theater more, and tried to write plays which didn’t work out so well. I got a job editing infomercials and corporate videos, that’s what my first movie, The Hole Story is about. I edited videos for five years and that was sort of my film school because I got to learn how to tell a story. I acted in my first movie in New York, and because of that this director named Andrew Bajulski asked me to act in his movie and he’s got a lot of indie credibility. People see his movies, not so much mine. Then I ended up getting a few smaller roles and that opened doors. So I acted in five or 10 movies before I met Lena.

You’re playing Marty Green in the new Coen Brothers film Inside Llewyn Davis. How was it working with the Coen Brothers?

I shot it last year and I can’t wait to see it. Adam Driver [Karpovsky’s Girls costar] is in it too and he saw it and said it was good, so that was nice to hear because I trust his opinion. It was fun working with them and was nice to be asked.

Are you interested in doing high budget films or would it ruin your ‘indie street cred’?

I don’t know how much indie cred I have, but I’d love to, sure. I want to try doing different things. There’s of course the terror of compromising your creative integrity but there are many people I know that have gone on to do medium, high budget, and even studio films while still preserving their own sensibility and aesthetic. It is possible, and if I think there’s a 50/50 chance of pulling it off, I would definitely do that.

It’s been said that you’re somewhat of a commitment-phobe with apartments and relationships. What are you so scared of?

There’s a fear that it may be difficult to get out of the relationship. I’ve definitely been in relationships for way too long because I didn’t want to hurt the other person, and there’s the fear of dependence. I also sometimes feel like I’d really disappoint the person or hurt them. There’s the potential of regret that you would make a mistake. I’ve definitely experienced that before as well, but I’m getting better at it. And when I say I’m a commitment-phobe I’m exaggerating a little bit, but whatever is there I’m getting better at. After we meet I’m looking at an apartment on the corner, which involves a 12-month lease, baby steps to independence!

Have you tried yoga or meditation to deal with anxiety or depression?

I meditate pretty much everyday and if I didn’t do it, things would be a lot worse. I’d be running around like a chicken without his head cut off, frazzled, anxious, and disoriented. So yeah I do it for 20 minutes everyday after breakfast and it’s a good thing for me.

Tell me five living Jews you’d like to have at your dinner table?

Woody Allen, Bob Dylan, Philip Roth, Jonathan Ames, and David Remnick. I’m assuming David is Jewish but I’m not sure.

What are some of your next projects?

Well we just released Red Flag and Rubberneck last month and Girls is just beginning filming Season 3, so that will take five or six months. I’m also writing one comedy, one drama, and playing with a TV idea. So, I hope one of them solidifies and we can go into production soon after we wrap Season 3 of Girls. In September, October I hope one of my projects gains traction.

Are you friends with everyone on the show?

Yeah we’re friends but we don’t hang out that much. We see plenty of each other. I think Lena’s done a great job of creating a really friendly and easygoing vibe on set. There’s no pressure, everyone seems to genuinely get along and are supportive of each other. Lena has gone out of her way to create a safe place for us and we can be ourselves and are encouraged to take risks. I think that reverberates with how you interact with the other actors. Because of the way Lena holds her set and because of how much admiration I have for their acting skills, it’s very easy to get along with them.

Do you have hope for Shoshanna and Ray’s relationship?

I have hope, but I think they are both going to have to do a lot of work to nurture a sustaining relationship that has any hope of longevity. They need to both do some soul searching and walk the earth in their own ways.

Girls actress Zosia Mamet celebrated her 25th birthday just like you did—with a cleavage-bearing visit to Late Night with Jimmy Fallon before heading to a production of the off-Broadway play Really Really, in which she plays Leigh.

Fallon explained to the audience who Mamet’s playwright father is (some guy named David), and asked if he was supportive of her acting career. “Very supportive,” Mamet replied. “He loves it. Totally. Couldn’t ask for more from that man.”

“He is absolutely psyched,” she continued. “It was pretty obvious from day one that I wasn’t going to college—my little brother got the smarts in the family. I told him I wanted to act and that I was skipping out on school and he said, ‘Thank God one of my children is finally listening to me.'”

“I lucked out for sure,” she added.

At this point, it seems somewhat daunting—and perhaps pointless—to try and write anything about Girls. After all, what hasn’t been said about it? Haters are gonna hate; fashionistas are going to obsess over every outfit; and ridiculous people will make absurd claims about how the show is “a giant economic loss for high-end gyms.” Then again, even before the first episode aired everyone was ranting and raving, so what’s to stop us now, with the Season 2 premiere airing Sunday—especially if it’s to follow up on the biggest problem in Season 1: Shoshanna.

Last April, after just three episodes, I felt compelled to ask if everyone’s favorite FUBU show had a Shoshanna problem. It most definitely did. While Zosia Mamet was, and still is, impeccable at playing the allegedly-in-college student Shoshanna Shapiro, that didn’t detract from the pure and simple fact that she served as simply a punch line. What’s more, the other characters on the show knew it too, and had no idea what to do with her. (I still cringe thinking about Marnie’s—played by Allison Williams—reaction at the abortion party.)

You can chalk it up to Dunham saying that Shosh wasn’t supposed to be a full cast member—something that was confirmed in the recent New York Times Magazine profile of Mamet, your new BFF—and that kind of makes sense. For one thing, it explains why, unlike the other three girls, she never really had any scenes that focused on her early on, save the glorious Camp Ramah romantic reunion arc in Episode 4 with Skyler Astin (the guy from Pitch Perfect). But it doesn’t explain why, when she is on screen, her character always seems to be the poor, pathetic joke. Then again, a lot has happened during the first season, most notably that Shosh, as of the season finale, is no longer a virgin, the source of her biggest baggage.

While I’m excited to see what’s to come of Roshanna (come on, you know Shosh came up with a celebrity couple name for herself and Ray, and one that sounds like a Jewish holiday no less) in Season 2, I’m more excited to see what Dunham does with Shoshanna now that she doesn’t have to be defined by her virginity. Though frankly I wish she had done more with Shosh’s virginity. In a show with such a raw, and arguably “real,” portrayal of sex—especially bad sex—is it so much to ask for that the virgin perspective be a bit more nuanced? Discussed instead of just mocked?

But instead of solving the problem, Dunham avoided it completely. Though, to be fair, even if her sexuality remained a punch line, Dunham let Shoshanna somehow manage to move beyond it in other ways. Here is probably where I have to admit that, somewhere between Episode 4 and Episode 10, I became a Shosh fan. It’s kind of like how I became a Schmidt fan, actually. Schmidt’s journey from douchebag to aspirational douchebag is surprisingly similar to Shoshanna’s mid-season journey from mindless insecure JAP to self-aware and, in many ways, confident JAP. Emily Shire wrote about this evolution of the TV JAP in the Forward at the end of Season 1:

At first glance, Shoshanna Shapiro is just the latest JAP doll on this long conveyor belt of stock figures. She is a major source of comic relief on the show, and is more of a caricature than any of the other characters. Her fanatical obsession with “Sex and the City,” and her declaration that her British cousin Jessa Johansson is “so f**king classy” for not being on Facebook, draw instant laughs. Yet each episode also reveals other layers to Shoshanna’s character that go beyond the stereotype. It’s not that she is any less of a princess as the series progresses; she still loves her clothes, her parentally funded apartment, and her Camp Ramah memories. But she also displays a vulnerability and earnestness that was notably lacking in previous JAP characterizations.

I don’t totally buy Shire’s point—essentially that Shosh represents a progression in how JAPs are portrayed on TV—but I do think she’s right about one thing: Shosh isn’t your average JAP. Her vulnerability and earnestness transformed her JAPiness the way that Schmidt’s transformed his douchebagness, and somewhere along the line we, the viewers, started laughing with her and not at her, even if the rest of the Girls are still laughing at her. Maybe it’s the busy eyebrows, maybe it’s the crack, but her JAPiness never stopped her, never defined her, the way that her virginity always did. For Shoshanna, JAPiness was never the problem—if anything, it was, and remains, her most entertaining quality—one that she embraces wholeheartedly.

Of course, Girls is Hannah’s (played by Dunham) story. The other three characters are there to serve as her foils. But now that Shosh’s virginity no longer makes her less experienced than Hannah, the question for Season 2 is, now that we’ve moved beyond her virginity, what will be her new defining characteristic?

Taffy Brodesser-Akner talked to 24-year-old actress Zosia Mamet, who these days is always getting recognized for—and sometimes even confused as—her breakout role as the earnestly naive Shoshanna Shapiro on Lena Dunham’s HBO hit Girls. But she’s quick to point out that she’s no Shoshanna.

The most noticeable difference between the insecure Shoshanna and the self-assured, articulate Mamet, who’s trying her hand at theater next, is confidence. Mamet, who “says ‘like’ a lot and curses plenty” almost seems like the anti-Shosh (except for the ‘like’ habit), aware of exactly why her show has become the cultural sensation it has but maintaining that she, unlike her character, isn’t lost:

Still, she gets it, in theory. She certainly gets why “Girls” has hit a nerve. “Your 20s are weird, but nobody tells you that,” she says. “I think that’s what Lena’s trying to say. Everyone tells you that your adolescence, that’s going to be hard. High school is going to suck. But nobody tells you that your 20s are going to be rough, that basically you’re cast into the real world and told to figure it out.”

Here’s what else David’s daughter had to say:

On her grungy Girls audition: “I did my tape in one of my father’s oversize sweaters and no makeup and dirty hair,” she says.

On her casual WASP-dom: “The only WASPy part of me is that I like gin,” she says. “Oh, and I ride horses.”

On being really awesome: “if I were not an actress, I would be a pirate.”

Catch Mamet in all her Shoshanna glory when Girls Season 2 premieres January 13.

Can’t get enough of Zosia Mamet, better known as Girls’ scene-stealing Ramah alum Shoshanna Shapiro?

Ms. Mamet will also make her Off Broadway debut as the downbeat, enigmatic Leigh in Paul Downs Colaizzo’s “Really Really,” a drama about sexual politics and culture clashes among college students.

Our fingers are crossed that Leigh is like, Shoshanna’s other cousin or something.

Playwright David Mamet, who publicly disavowed his former liberal leanings, has made quite the strong-worded endorsement for Mitt Romney in the Jewish Journal. In it, he makes repeated reference to children, which makes us think of his daughter Zosia, better known as the clingy, image-conscious Shoshanna Shapiro on Lena Dunham’s HBO series, Girls. Needless to say, Shosh would be mortified.

Here’s what Mamet has to say to “those Jews planning to vote for Obama:”

Are you prepared to explain to your children not the principles upon which your vote is cast, but its probable effects upon them?

Irrespective of your endorsement of liberal sentiments, of fairness and “more equal distribution,” will you explain to your children that top-down economic policies will increasingly limit their ability to find challenging and well-paid work, and that the diminution in employment and income will decrease their opportunity to marry and raise children?

Will you explain (as you have observed) that a large part of their incomes will be used to fund programs that they may find immoral, wasteful and/or indeed absurd? And that the bulk of their taxes go to no programs at all, but merely service the debt you entailed on them?

Will you tell your children that a liberal government will increasingly marginalize, dismiss and weaken the support for and the safety of the Jewish state?

Shoshanna is so not talking to him right now. Mamet, meanwhile, is the guest of honor at tonight’s Manhattan Institute Wriston Lecture, an honor typically reserved for the likes of Condoleezza Rice, George Will, and the Honorable Samuel A. Alito, Jr.

Mamets. So hot right now.

This Sunday night, the 64th annual Emmy Awards will honor the best in television. Each year a handful of episodes from each of the nominated series are selected to showcase a show’s best work. Since we’re in the business of honoring the best in Jewish television, we present the top five Jewish moments from this year’s Emmy-nominated shows, from Palestinian chicken and Camp Ramah to terrorists and concentration camps.

1. Curb Your Enthusiasm (Season 8: “Palestinian Chicken”)

Larry (Larry David) and Jeff (Jeff Garlin) try a new popular Palestinian chicken place and deem it the perfect place for Jewish men to bring their mistresses since no Jews would ever eat there. (Alan Dershowitz even sent Bibi a copy!)

Air Date: July 24, 2011
Choice Line: “We’re probably the only Jews that have ever walked in here.”

2. Homeland (Season 1: “The Weekend”)

Saul Berenson (Mandy Patinkin) opens up about his lonely Jewish upbringing to his terrorist suspect passenger while driving back to CIA headquarters, creating an unexpected parallel between their situations.

Air Date: Nov. 13, 2011
Choice Line: “I’d gladly say their prayers, sing the songs. I just wanted to not be alone.”

Unfortunately a YouTube clip doesn’t exist (let us know in the comments if you find one!), but the entire episode is available on iTunes—the scene starts at the 37-minute mark.

3. Boardwalk Empire (Season 2: “To The Lost”)

Butcher Manny Horvitz hides out in the basement of a synagogue as he nostalgically remembers his Ukrainian past and plots out his future.

Air Date: Dec. 11, 2012
Choice Line: “I wake up sometimes and think I’m still there [Odessa], 12 years old, my whole life ahead of me, but then I realize I’m in America. That world is gone.”

4. Mad Men (Season 5: “Far Away Places”)

Copywriter Michael Ginsberg (Ben Feldman), explicitly hired to appease Jewish client Manischewitz, reveals that he was born in a concentration camp, turning a punch line about the token Jew into a far more serious self-reflective matter that haunts the office.

Air Date: April 22, 2012
Choice Line: “Are there others like you?” / “I don’t know, I haven’t been able to find any.”

Again, there’s no YouTube clip available, but the entire episode is on iTunes—the scene starts at the 12 minute mark.

5. Girls (Season 1: “Hannah’s Diary”)

The excitable Shoshanna runs into an old friend who remembers her best from a raid she led during their days together at Camp Ramah.

Air Date: May 6, 2012
Choice Line: “You led the most intense kitchen raid I ever saw in my time as a junior counselor.”

Have another favorite Jewish scene from this year? Let us know in the comments!

One highlight of the Girls Season 1 DVD gag reel is this clip of Shoshanna (Zosia Mamet) and Jessa (Jemima Kirke). Aside from her trademark pink Juicy Couture sweatsuit, Shoshanna is sporting her classic wince as she passive aggressively deals with Jemima climbing all over her stuffed animals—until, of course, they both crack up.

There was one casualty, though, and his name is Snuffles:
