Adding the driving force to The Antlers songs, Michael Lerner is quickly making a name for himself as one of the most talented drummers in indie-rock. Since The Antlers critically acclaimed album, Hospice debuted last spring, The Antlers have been touring tirelessly, playing to sold out venues across the globe. Currently Michael and the rest of The Antlers are on tour with The National, and Michael took some time to answer questions from the road.
How did you get involved in Music, and the Antlers? How long have you played Drums?
I have been playing drums since I was 6 years old. I’m not sure why, exactly, but I was completely drawn to them. It’s just always been what I’ve wanted to do. I met Peter & started playing as a member of The Antlers in the spring of 2007. There’s something special about his singing that made me really want to play music with him.
Any other bands you have been a part of that seemed like a good idea at the time and now you look back and say something such as, "man, I can’t believe I was in a Prog Rock band?"
Ha. Well, I’m sure everyone’s had an experience like that. I have done a lot of one off’s & fill in gigs over the years. I can tell you that ine time I found out that I had agreed to play a show at the Astor Place Starbucks. Oy vey.
What are your favorite Memories from The Antlers so far?
There has been so much good stuff happening lately that I could give you a huge laundry list of things & places we’ve been to & people I’ve met. I’d have to say right at the top would have to be playing a show at the Opera house at the Brooklyn Academy of Music.
Any musicians that you admire?
My drumming heroes include Tony Williams, Elvin Jones, John Bonham, Neil Peart & Buddy Rich.
Did you go to Jewish Summer Camp?
My Aunt & Uncle had a camp that I went to, although it wasn’t Jewish, per se. I did go on a teen tour to Israel that was full of crazy memories, but may not be appropriate for a classy publication such as this one!
