Dutch Family Members Wear Star of David Necklaces to Combat Anti-Semitism

Theo Klopstra, Gerja Warners, and their daughter—all non-Jews—have taken to wearing Star of David pendants to raise awareness about rising anti-Semitism in the Netherlands, the Times of Israel reports.

Warners said that her family is “ashamed of what is happening in their country,” and reported that Dutch Jews are avoiding appearing outwardly Jewish by removing mezuzzahs and eschewing head coverings in public. Earlier this year, the Center for Information and Documentation on Israel, known as CIDI, reported 23% increase in anti-Semitic incidents from 2012 to 2013.

Because there is no substantial Jewish population in their community, the family bought the necklaces from a synagogue one town over. Warner told the Times of Israel that the Jews “have such an awful history of being hunted, abused, called names, and murdered just for being there.” She hopes that being publicly identified as ‘Jewish’ will help foster dialogue and tolerance.
