Well, now it can be said that the most noble thing Alberto Gonzales did as attorney general was resign. More startling than his penchant for lying under oath before Congress, and for doing all in his limited capacity to blot out inconvenient passages of the Constitution, has been his creepy down-home friendship with the President. No other attorney general since Robert Kennedy has had such implicit "faith" placed him in by a chief executive.
Of course, with the departure of Karl Rove, this means two of the most cynical and effective Knights of Crawford have fallen in battle. Where does this leave the floundering king?
A senior administration official said today that Gonzales, who was in Washington, had called the president in Crawford, Tex., on Friday to offer his resignation. The president rebuffed the offer, but said the two should talk face to face on Sunday.
Gonzales and his wife flew to Texas, and over lunch on Sunday the president accepted the resignation with regret, the official said.
On Saturday night, Gonzales was contacted by his press spokesman to ask how the department should respond to inquiries from reporters about rumors of his resignation, and Gonzales told the spokesman to deny the reports.
