Mitt Romney Is Not Losing His Religion

Just yesterday, Republican Presidential candidate Mitt Romney was interviewed on "This Week" with George Stephanopoulos, where the former Clinton advisor grilled Romney on his faith and whether or not his practice of Mormonism would be a detriment to his candidacy.

Romney, practicing the art of inclusiveness (with the Christian Right), or perhaps just playing the role of tactful politician, explained to Stephanopoulos:

"Our belief is just as it says in the Bible, that the messiah will come to Jerusalem, stand on the Mount of Olives and that the Mount of Olives will be the place for the great gathering and so forth.

It's the same as the other Christian tradition. But that being said, how do Muslims feel about Christian doctrines? They don't agree with them.

There are differences between doctrines of churches. But the values at the core of the Christian faith, the Jewish faith and many other religions are very, very similar and it's that common basis that we have to support and find ability to draw people to rather than to point out the differences between our faiths.

One major glitch in Romney's argument (as Stephanopoulos pointed out and can be confirmed) is that the Mormon faith does not see Israel as the final resting place for the Messiah, but some podunk town in Missouri.

Regardless of the lack of credibility in Romney's words, I couldn't help but feel a bit tickled by this Jewlicious post on the Church of the Latter Day Saint Facility overlooking the Old City in Jerusalem. Only after the Mormons promised that they would not proselytize were they allowed the go ahead.

Looks like the Mormon Messiah might be making a guest appearance in Jerusalem en route to Missouri after all.
