The Gelato of Democracy

There's been another civil war raging in the Middle East, and it's one that more actively involves the Kurds — of Turkey. In Diyarbakir, the Kurdish "capital" of southern Turkey, militants calling themselves the Kurdish Freedom Falcons have been blowing up cars and storefronts in an effort to Islamize a polity known for its pluralism and tolerance. The Erdogan regime — which is now enjoying warmer relations with Iraqi Kurdistan because it knows it must, post-Saddam and pre-EU integration — claims the KFF is just another offshoot organization of the PKK, a Stalinoid nationalist party that allegedly gave up armed struggle in 1999 after its leader Abdallah Ocalan was arrested. Some Kurds doubt the nexus between the old and the new, or think it's on par with, say the one between Ansar al-Islam and Al-Qaeda: likeminded but organizationally distinct.

But never you mind all the regressions into the murky world of sectarian sharia strife. Wanna check out this paragraph from The Economist?

Throngs of visitors record their outrage in a diary. One entry reads: “Let us all taste the sherbet of martyrdom.” A painting to raise money for “the cause” shows a skull emblazoned with the Star of David, blood dripping from its fangs onto the Muslims' holiest shrine in Mecca.

The sherbert of martyrdom. I think that's actually a verse from Byron. (Though his Lordship probably had something in there about sodomy, too.)
