A fruity drink, a good tan, and Jewish culture…

When I travel (which isn’t often enough these days) I always try and research the Jewish community in the town I’m visiting.  Hence, I’ve been to the Venice ghetto, the Florence synagogue, the Irish-Jewish Museum in Dublin, and the Freud Museum.  Even though I didn’t find these sites in cities one thinks of as “Jewish” cities.

It’s always really interesting, in the midst of the larger culture… to find the Jewish culture… to discover that it was operating against or alongside the host culture.  Because although Israel is certainly the largest treasure trove of Jewish history and life… it’s certainly not the only storehouse.

So I thought I’d mention, as we all make our plans for summer vacation, that it’s worth a little digging to see if there’s Jewish life in the town you plan to visit.  There almost always is.

Poland is easy, New York is easy, but what about Atlanta?  BaltimoreKey West?

Even if all you plan to do is bask in the sun and eat fresh fish, you might take an afternoon to learn about the Jews of your vacation hotspot.  It’s likely to stand out in your memory, when all the surf and turf begins to run together.
