I think this little Q & A is creeeeeeepy, but I'm not sure just why, or what that says about me. I mean, this dude is a rabbi, after all, and I'm certainly not. But something about it rings hollow for me. The idea of praying for crap I want just feels childish, selfish. And the simple fact of sticking "Blessed art thou…" in front of the "…give me candy, NOW!" doesn't make it feel any better.
So I've done a little online snooping about what Jewish prayer is, and this site says it's to "increase your awareness of God." It goes on the explain that the repetition of prayer in Judaism is like a kind of "practice makes perfect" model. Muscle memory.
I want to spend some time on this tonight and tomorrow, see if I can put together a kind of "praying for dunces" post. Because I really don't know what prayer is all about. What kinds of Jewish prayer exist? Why pray in a group? Why pray at all?
