In Illinois, You Gotta Pray to Play

Did anyone else miss this?

 How did I miss this?

Illinois is mandating a "moment of silence" in its public schools.  MANDATING!  Changing the language of the law from "may" to shall".  That's a big difference.

Suggest I pray, and I may slug you in the throat.

Force me to pray and I shall slug you in the throat.

Of course, we can't get too upset. After all…

Like most such laws, it specifies that the moment "shall not be conducted as a religious exercise but shall be an opportunity for silent prayer or for silent reflection on the anticipated activities of the day."

Umm…

Is "silent prayer" not a religious act?  Since when?

Besides… is every quiet moment in one's day not an opportunity for silent prayer?

I want to know… is anyone else horribly offended by this? Because I'm OFFENDED!

I'm not opposed to prayer, not at all. I just don't see why it has to be mandated.

Ever.  EVER!

I don't know if I'd feel like this if I weren't Jewish, if I weren't part of a minority.  But in this world full of diabetic bunnies and fat red men… I can't help knowing  that when I was a kid, sitting in a classroom of Christians, I'd have felt as though the silent prayers swirling around me… were just another wall. Another difference.

Prayer can bring us together, but it separates us at the same time.

No matter how quiet it may be.
