Working at Hillel, I came to understand something about Passover…
Nearly everyone observes it on some level. Really and truly!
The same Jews who skip the High Holidays to cram for midterms or get wasted with their friends… show up at Hillel to beg for a box of matza.
The same Jews who stare at you blankly when you ask if they keep kosher… will spend all of Passover whining about the lack of Pesadik dorm food.
The same Jews who don't hang out with other Jews the rest of the year… scramble to find someplace to spend their Seder.
I don't know why this is. Maybe because Passover is FUN! Maybe because since there are 8 days of the holiday, you'd be a terrible lazybones if you didn't manage to observe in some way. Maybe because the dietary restrictions match up nicely with the Atkins diet.
In any case, it's true. Most of us observe Passover in some way. Though it isn't always easy.
Now that I live in Atlanta, preparing for Passover just means running over to the Kosher Kroger. But when I lived in Chattanooga, TN, or Iowa City, IA… it wasn't so easy.
Half the time the store stocked nothing more than a few old boxes of matza. Half the time they didn't order enough supplies and they ran out–I'd get to the store and find one bent box of fruit slices and an open can of macaroons. Half the time, they'd order enough matza, but not understand that not ALL matza is kosher for Passover. So I'd get home and find that my box of matza was just the year-round stuff, now pulled off the tiny Jew-shelf and stuck on a display near the Peeps and Cadbury Cream eggs at the front of the story.
This is the lament of the proud Jews of Bumblefuck: No selection at Passover. Not enough matza.
Excuses. Excuses. Excuses.
So today, from my comfortable home in a large Jewish community, I want to take a second to link to this site that will deliver your Passover supplies… should you happen to live in a small town in Idaho.
Because there's still time for delivery!
(one thought… it might be a good idea to go in on this with a few friends… so you can get out of paying for shipping! Co-op Pesach!)
