Today at The Daily Beast, Peter Beinart writes about President Obama’s “Jewish Problem,” which, for those of you who don’t care to read it, breaks down like this:
First paragraph: Asks “What would it take to make American Jewish groups admit that an Israeli prime minister is not serious about peace?’
Second paragraph: Beinart says Bibi has “reneged on commitments made by his predecessors,” mentions Nazi Germany (of course. What piece on Jews would be complete without a mention of Nazi Germany?), mentions again that if you like peace, Netanyahu isn’t your guy.
Fourth paragraph: Starts to get closer to source of Obama’s “Jewish problem”:
“So let’s get this straight. When Netanyahu agrees to a settlement moratorium, it’s a sign of his commitment to peace. And now that he has let the moratorium end? It’s still a sign of his commitment to peace because, as AIPAC now insists, negotiations must proceed without preconditions. It’s back to “the problem isn’t settlements.”
Fifth paragraph: Ah-ha!
“But the problem-or at least a crucial problem-is settlements.”
Beinart then talks for a few more paragraphs, then launches into an impassioned memorial for the fallen Segway honcho who rode his vehicle off a cliff, and died.
Okay, that’s not true: Beinart lays a lot of the blame (again) on American Jewish institutions for not being more critical of Bibi, settlements, and Israel as a whole.
